  • 2006 F150TXR upper shift assembly binding puzzle

I have twin 2006 F150TXRs. The starboard engine is binding when shifting. It will go into forward reverse and neutral but tight. Can’t really feel detent when going to neutral.

    what I have done:
    1. Removed shift cable from engine slide bracket and using 704 binacle shifts smoothly and can feel detent in neutral
    2. With shift cable detached from slide bracket I can move shift lever with finger but barely. On the port motor I can easily do this going into FNR.
    3. Removed stbd lower lower unit and then could easily move shift lever into FNR using fingers at slide. Felt same as port engine. So I think lower unit problem.
    4. So I put port lower unit on stbd motor and get same problem. Very difficult to move toFNR using fingers to move shift lever
    5. Then I put stbd lower unit on port engine and no binding. Can easily shift FNR by moving shift lever by hand same as with port lower unit on.
    6. I can see where the shift linkage goes to the bracket where the shit rod goes down through the bottom cowling. All looks good still bolted down and tight. Doesn’t wobble around when changing gears.

so I think I have isolated it to something to do with the upper shift rod assmebly? I don’t see a lot to go wrong in the service manual, there’s a grommet and bolt with a spring and ball that looks like a tensioner but all move freely with no lower unit attached. Maybe when it gets under some pressure it binds?

To take all that out I would have to pull powerhead. Trying to see if anyone has run into this or other ideas that might cause this before I do that.

    Thanks

I also checked lower units when I had them off. I could switch between FNR and both seemed similar. Would have to move prop at times to get it to go all the way in gear. Both have a little “catch” before going into FNR. I did just replace the seals on the shift rod and driveshaft in stbd LU. It had water in it. It now holds 10psi for several minutes after new seals.
