Hello,
I'm looking for some ideas, or at least some starting points to help Me troubleshoot an intermittent problem on my 2012 F70 with 660 hours on it.
I'll try to explain the symptoms /scenarios as simple as possible, but please bare with me on my explanations.
I'll list some of the variables and thing I've checked as well.
The motor randomly won't start. (it's happened twice recently.
#1, it's only ever happened on the water.
When this happens, I can hear a light 'click', . . . I can't confirm it is or isn't the starter trying to engage. It seems more faint than the starter.
The command link gauge would light up, but trim & tilt would not work.
The 1st time it happened, I was able to get back to the launch ramp using the *****ing motor. I went up to my truck, grabbed my jump starter, and it fired right up.
After I pulled the boat out, the trim & tilt worked, fine. I got home, put the ear muffs on to flush the motor and it fired right up on it's own, w/o. a jump.
Battery voltage reads 12.88 volts . . . Lifeline Brand AGM Battery approx. 1 year old.
2nd time (2-days ago) . . . launched to go fishing, fired right up.
I started and stopped the motor 6 different times w/o an issue.
On the 7th time, I had the same issue . . . dead when i turned the key.
Put to Noco jumper on, and it fired right up.
Same deal, pulled the boat out, trim worked perfect . . . . got it home to flush the motor, and it fired right up w/o a jump.
A few points of info . . . . .
All the motoring was done in a 5mph zone, so no excessive heat build up from running.
Water/ air temp. was around 60 degrees F.
When it does happen, I do move the gear shift in & out of gear, and check the killswitch by pulling it and replacing it.
I also turned the main power switch on and off as well.
Battery terminals are all tight and free of corrosion.
Visual inspection under the dash doesn't show me any obvious signs of loose, pinched/, chaffed, or corroded wires.
All terminal connections appear to be good.
Simple inspection under the cowling doesn't show anything loose, burnt, or otherwise.
No alarms have sounded on the motor, and no messages on the command link gauge.
The motor is in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition . . . I'm very thorough with not only maintenance, but usage.
Boat is stored outdoors, but on it's trailer and always covered when not being used.
I do have the Yamaha service manual, but not the computer software / diagnostic tools.
Seems like a simple electrical issue . . . but being intermittent and difficult to replicate I figured I'd ask.
I figured I'd post on here to maybe get me pointed in the right direction to get started.
I'd like to do my best to avoid taking it in to a dealer . . . especially chasing electrical gremlins.
Thanks for any help, thoughts, or ideas.
