  • F250 fuel/water separators interchangeable (2005/later)?

    Engine is 2005 F250 3.3L
I cracked the plastic female-threaded mount while unscrewing the fuel/water separator (engine-mounted one, 6P2-24409-00-00), so replaced with a used replacement from a 2011 version (6P3-24560-03-00).
It fit perfectly, but different cup shape and metal threaded end (an improvement). It also didn't come with the require o-ring/gasket (6P3-24564-00-00), so I reused the one from 2005 cup (different model #, 6P2-24564-00-00). The old gasket appeared to fit fine in the new one, and was in decent shape.

Everything worked fine for a few hours of starting/stopping to fish, but then starting became an issue...

Problem is that the engine will start right up, but die within a few seconds. Attempts to restart just sputter out.
It eventually restarts after sitting with key on (hear lift pump working) and then everything's fine. Purrs at idle right at 600 rpm...
After these starting issues, ran it on plane for 30 mins figuring it was bad fuel (its stabilized E-free though), but when back to fishing it had the same problem.

One thing to mention is that we fished in very shallow water, so engine was tilted up just enough to keep prop/cav plate underwater. Restarts were at this angle as well, and tilting down seems to help after letting lift pump work before start. I've ordered a replacement gasket (correct one for 2011) and will recheck zip ties on fuel line, but it appears the engine is starved for fuel at start only.

Any thoughts if these fuel units aren't interchangeable??

    2005 Model (6P2-24409-00-00)
    2011 Model (6P3-24560-03-00)

*Edit- is there a chance the fuel lines to between 2005/2011 were different diameter? Perhaps not completely sealed on the filter assembly.

Does squeezing the primer bulb re-fill the engine or is it staying full?
