  • Yamaha f150xa 2012 lower unit or dual station issue?

I have a 2012 Yamaha F150 over the past few trips. I’ve had issues with it going into neutral. The engine will rev up while underway. However, today for the first time while underway I’m trying to limp back in to the marina. The engine starts to bog down I couldn’t get, 2 to 3000 RPM at all I could only just keep it just in gear cruise but then it finally gave out. It just popped back in that if it was in the neutral it wouldn’t wouldn’t shift a Lower unit issue or possibly a stretched cable.??

I do have the Yamaha dual station system where shifting is controleded by an electronic shift box.

A month ago, I changed the Lower unit oil. It was clean no metal debris. I did have this issue issue at the end of last season and I thought it was a one time thing however, now it’s consistently doing it.
yep, I’m currently being told in now and I figured I put this post up to see what I can dig into tomorrow

I am not sure what you are being told, but I would think you could see if the motor's linkage is being moved when you move a control from either station .
but I am not familiar with dual station electronic shift box.
Is this on the motor itself or somewhere else and it moves a cable linked to the motor?

you certainly have a lot of different motors you have had problems with, do you even figure out how to fix any of them?

      99yam40,

I have a couple boats for the different type of fishing. I have a 16ft privateer for small creeks and trout fishing. I have a 21 Parker for the Chesapeake bay.

I think I have isolated the issue to either a stretched shift cable or the shift actuator for the dual station system is faulty.

I wanted to know if a failing lower unit would have the symptoms under a load. Issue the past few times have happened at the end of the trip so I don’t know if something is overheating???

there’s a junction box that all the control cables go to and there’s a sensor that controls the shift actuator.

99yam40. I had a few motors as I like to tinker and learn about outboards. I used to be an auto technician. It’s nice to be able to work on your own stuff and not relay on shops being backed up. Some of my friends said there mechanics are 6-8 months backed up on work.

I also was an auto tech back in my younger days, actually went to schools and became an Automotive Technologist.
(really just a mechanic with some schooling)

then an electrician in a chemical plant, then I&E before I retired
I have always worked on things, even back in elementary school I had a Moped I took care of, and some friends parents would bring their kid's broken moped over for me to repair from time to time.

retired now and I help my neighbor and friends out when I can.

So is there a cable from the box to the motor that you can watch to see if that cable is moving when it should and is it moving as far as it should to shift the motor properly?
when it will not go into gear, can you disconnect the cable at the motor and manually put it into gear?
