  • Yamaha 70BETO 6H3 L 45202 - Starting and idle issues

    Hi Team,

I've had this outboard for a few years now and it's never seems to run perfectly. The mains issues were it starting from cold, cutting out when put into gear and cutting out on idle. Some times we got all of them sometimes only one issue.

We have had it serviced but the issues were still apparent. I've recently changed the fuel pump, New fuel line and cleaned out the carbs. I've also installed a new kill switch. The petrol is fresh also.

To get it started now I have to manually open the carbs and it will run for around 30 seconds then die. The manual chalk won't do anything to get it started.

Just wondering where to start looking now?

    Thank you in advance.

    the motor needs
    good compression,
good spark at the correct time
and the proper ratio of fuel to air
check what you can easily, and then try to figure out if there is too much or too little fuel

you say the manual choke does not help, so this motor must not be a prime start model.
but does it close off the choke plates on the carbs when you move the lever?

does it have an electric choke?
does it close the choke plates?

Get a little spray bottle with some mixed gas, spray a little in each carb, choke off, and see if it will start easily. If it does start ,can you keep it idling by spraying a little fuel in each carb when it tries to die?

If doing the above works, then you have a fuel delivery problem. Where the carbs completely disassembled and cleaned in ultrasonic cleaner? Sometimes it takes several cleanings to get those idle passages clear.
