It appears that a new lower unit for a 2005/2006 FTLR 90 is identical to one that I need for my 1987 ETLH 90 - with the exception that the shift shaft linkage has been redesigned - which is an internal issue and probably a re-design to a more robust style.
I've looked at the schematics and they appear to have exactly the same components except for this.
Are all these lower units pretty much interchangeable from year to year - assuming that the casings are the correct size?
Part number for the 87 is 6H1-45300-13EK
Part number for the 05/06 is 6D9 45300-31-4DA
The difference in the shift shaft area is noted below in the two attached diagrams:
