  • removeing lower unit

I have a 1985 90hp, I am going to replace the water pump on it. I have the Selco repair manual and it says to unscrew the lower shift rod from the upper, I was looking over the motor and I could not see where the two rods are connected. Could someone explain to me how and where this is done. Thanks

    mossboss,
You really need to get a factory Yamaha manual to help you work on your motor. On my 2000 C115, the shift rod is just coupled together and comes apart when you drop the lower unit. The only thing that you have to be careful of is to make sure the shift rod is in neutral before you try to stab the lower unit back in place.
When you stab the lower unit, you will first feed the speedometer tube thru the upper case, and then make sure the water pump tube and shift rod line up - you will do this the last few inches of travel before the lower unit is in place. It is a lot easier if you have another person helping to line everything up while you hold the lower unit in place. You will need to tilt the motor up about thirty degrees so that the drive shaft can go in first.
Make sure the drive shaft splines have a thin coat of marine grease on them - and use a good thread sealer (I use Permatex 14A with Teflon) on the lower unit bolt threads and on the water pump bolts. Also, the Yamaha manual calls for grease on the new impeller.
It would be best to follow the recommended torque on all bolts - use a quality 3/8 inch drive torque wrench.
    Good luck,
    Ken K
