  • starting problem

Our 1993 Yamaha 130 began to start hard last year. I know its not good for the engine, but we got some starting fluid and it fired right up and ran good and started normally once warmed up after that initial start. WE were on vacation at Cape Cod and subsequently had the carbs rebuilt by a dealer up there. It seemed to be OK at first but this year is doing the same thing. It runs and idles beutifully aside from that. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    tideguy,
If you are storing the boat for the winter (and you probably are considering your location), then you need to add fuel stabilizer to a full tank of fuel and follow the instructions in the owners manual for winter storage.
The carburators are probably gummed up a little, although after starting, you say the motor runs and idles fine - so I would not do another carb rebuld for now.
A likely candidate for your hard starting problem is the choke and associated linkage. There should be a manual choke knob on your motor.
Take the cover off, pull the choke knob all the way out and observe the butterfly inside the carbs - they should fully close. Now try the electric choke and see if the butterflies close fully also. If not, then the choke solenoid is not pulling on the linkage hard enough, or the linkage to the carbs need to adjusted.
Another way to test the electric choke, is to first try the manual choke. If the motor starts easily the first time with the manual choke and not the electric, then the choke solenoid and linkage are not doing their job.
    Good luck,
    Ken K

thanks for the reply. Ill check the butterfly on the choke. The choke linkage adjustment sounds like a possibility. I didnt mention that I tied the manual choke and got the same result as the electric choke. What would be the best starting proceedure from a cold state. Also I forgot to mention that I fogged the engine and treated the fuel with stabilizer for the winter.

        tideguy,
Other than what I suggested, make sure the fuel line bulb is pumped hard before starting. On my C115, the fuel syphons from the carbs back down to the fuel tank after the motor has been at rest for a few hours. I can take the motor cover off and see and hear fuel being pumped thru the filter bowl and into the carbs.
        Good luck,
        Ken K
