    150 V-Max has no go....

    Hi Guys,

    I borrowed my buddies boat yesterday to go fishing, and it started off ok. We got her in the water and took off. For the first few minutes, it was running pretty rough, but we were still running around 40mph...I figured it would need to warm up before we got up to 60. Anyway, it never warmed up. As a matter of fact it got worse. the rpm's wouldn't go above 2500, and we couldn't get on plane anymore. Bass boat turned trawler. [img]smile.gif[/img]

    I want to say this has happened before. Last time, i think he cleaned the carbs and that fixed the problem. Does that sound likely? It has sat for a few months without use, but i didn't thinkt hat would be a problem. It was also last years gas at the bottom of the tank, but i put in all new fuel before we went...

    On the way back to the trailer, it got worse...it would only run at like 1200 rpm, and then occationally lurch to 2000, but the right back down.

    any ideas? should we just start with the carbs and go from there?

    oh yeah...one more thing. when the shifter was in neutral, and i would rev the engine up without engaging the drive, it would run all the way up to the red line. so it seems that its only a problem under power...does that make sense?

      carbs can be a real pain....try try again. and you might only see the problem under load,where it uses the most fuel.

          well, we pulled apart the carbs and let them soak overnight in that uber cleaning stuff from napa. There were some banjo bolt like things at the bottom of the bowl that had a lot of grime in them. If i were a betting man, i would say that was the problem. I'm not sure what they are called, but they looked like the banjo bolts on brake calipers to me...only smaller. [img]smile.gif[/img]

          oh yeah..its actually a pro-v outboard..not a v-max. my bad....

            i have a 89 pro v .........awesome motor....but after sitting for a while the carbs always clog. take them apart as far as you can...jets and all,and be ready to go to your dealer as the alu
            minum washer/gaskets corrode easily.I have done mine up to 3 times to get them right and they have to be run under load to test. good luck !!!
