How old is the waterpump? There's the standard things to check. The thermostats (clean and free of debris), the Pressure Relief Valve (clean and free of debris)(pain in the butt to check), and the waterpump itself. If you've run through mud, oyster bars, sand... this stuff tends to get stuck in the pressure relief valve and block it open, causing a premature loss of cooling water. It also tears the crap out of the impeller and stainless housing. But first if you don't have a factory shop manual for your motor go to www.Yamahapubs.com and order one. It has a ton of troubleshooting info in there that will help you solve most of your engine problems. As well as all the other info you need to properly maintain and work on your motor. Good luck.

It's likely the Poppit Valve. Clean the whole valve including the area underneath the rubber grommit, which is inside the block itself.
