    C40TLRX - PTT Issues, Troubleshooting

    Symptoms began with sluggish initial movement, up or down, with the motor gradually speeding up when positioning for launch or trailering. Then yesterday, when putting on trailer, just clicking from the relay, no lift. Opened manual relief valve to get it home.

    In the driveway, it began working intermittently. When the relay only clicks, it affects up and down, same from the two switches. I tested relay continuity and motor function based on instructions in the manual. All checked out except the relay continuity using a battery, and I may have done that part wrong. I tried it both ways where it was not clear (to me) which side of a separated wire was to be tested. No continuity in either case on both lifting and lowering circuits.

    However, I put it back together and it ran both directions. It seems that the only things the testing established is that I may be color-blind, and I probably have a problem still lurking. I saw just now where "bennettrp" had water intrusion in his PTT motor, and I wondered..., it being in the water when it quit. I was hoping to avoid tearing into that housing, but......... any advice on next steps? Thanks.

    when it just clicks ,did you check to see if any voltage was heading to the motor?

      99, I think that's what that failed test was attempting to verify. When I connected the leads, the relay clicked, but subsequent continuity checks were negative. I will specifically look for 12v(+) going to motor when momentary switch is activated, but results only in the clicking. I now know my way around that relay. Initially, I had to trace wires to even find it (still in apprenticeship). Thanks.

        The relay also has to make up the neg so make sure you measure the voltage across the motor leads .
        the relay reverses both the + & - to reverse the direction of the motor.

        you can test while it is functioning properly to make sure you know how it is suppose to work, then check when it just clicks to see what is not happening.
        if you get good voltage to the motor when it just clicks, measuring DC current thru the wires would help you decide if the brushes are not making good contact(no current) or large amount of current could mean motor bound up or shorted. Measuring current while it works would tell you what you should expect.
        I think a ammeter that can handle 40 Amps or more may be needed (Not sure)

          I had the same symptoms as your having with the PTT. When my F200TXRC PTT wouldn't respond I could peck on either the pump housing If up, or the outside bracket if down with the switch engaged and the PTT would work. This got me home and proved it was the motor in which I'm now repairing. See my post "power trim tilt brushes".

            Thanks, Gabe. Thanks 99. While it was misbehaving, I measured requisite voltage at the relay to the PTT motor, then, using the "shade tree" approach to the motor, tapped it reasonably lightly with a hammer. Which woke it up, but it was still sleepy (sluggish). New aftermarket motor ordered. Will have saved enough to go fishing when it's done. Thanks again, Guys.

              One Last Question

              I saw a recommendation to seal aftermarket PTT motors, by waterproofing joints/seams, and using rust-inhibiting paint. Can anyone advise as to the best waterproofing agent with which to seal the joints? Thanks.
