Zinc removal F60TLR

    Zinc removal F60TLR

    One of the zinc's on my transom bracket is pretty badly corroded.
    there are 2 stainless bolts holding it in place.
    I was going to hit it with some penetrating oil and let it soak a while.
    any tips to avoid breaking off the bolt ?

    I assume you have tried to loosen it? I wouldn't use anything bigger than a 1/4 ratchet to be safe. Give the penetrating oil a few days. No reason to hurry at this point. Tough to use heat right next to gel coat.

    If they snap, it would be fairly easy to drill those if this is a typical bracket anode.

        From an access standpoint how bad could it be?
        You may be on your back but not that big a deal. Certainly less critical than drilling out head bolts.

        Second thought, if it was my boat, I might try a little heat with this micro torch I have. To avoid the broken bolt in the first place.

          I was very pleased - and surprised - that I was able to back out these bolts
          (IIRC 3 of the 4 sheared off)





          PB Blaster, patience, vise grips, and for one,
          I filed flats on the stump and grabbed it with a tap handle

          I was not looking forward to trying to "drill them out".
          impossible to get the bit started on-center,
          and it skates off the bolt into the softer aluminum anyway.

          Plus the inner bolt is so close to the transom,
          no way to get a straight shot at it with a drill..

            Why remove/replace a zinc anode that is still there just doing it's job of corroding before other metallic parts?....maybe clean it with a wire brush and then go fishing....

                I posted on another forum regarding my new aluminum alloy tab anode not eroding much at all compared to my old zinc tab. The zinc tab would last maybe two years, this new one may last 3 times that. I was concerned it may not be protecting as well since it didn't appear as "active".

                Parker Yacht guy, who I believe is a Yam MT, says the real test is to weigh the anode. 50% weight loss = time to replace. Who knew we needed to weigh them prior to installing?

                    LOL! you got your money's worth from that anode

                    I don't think anyone would accuse you of changing it "prematurely"

                          not familiar with the F60 - didn't know there were two separate parts-

                          I thought I was seeing a regular "handle anode" - with all of it eaten away except the ends!
