  • 2003 40TLRB Yamaha Pilot light

I have recently acquired a 40 Yamaha TLRB with the pilot light in the bottom front of the lower cowling. I understand from reading the manual that it indicates oil conditions such as green= oil level good, yellow= low, red = stop engine no oil. I have no lights at all on while running. I have verified that the warning horn is working as a result of draining the oil tank. So would this mean that there is most likely something wrong in the light itself? If the warning horn is working why do I need the light anyway? Does the light just back up the horn or vice versa? Also, if the auto oil injection system malfunctions is there any warning at all? light, horn or just a sudden stop
    thanks in advance

The green light should normally be illuminated when the motor is running if the oil tank has about a half quart of oil or more.

Below about a half quart down to about a fifth of a quart the yellow light should be illuminated. The yellow light is the clue to add some oil.

Below about a fifth of a quart the red light will illuminate. The horn will sound and the motor will go into RPM reduction mode. This is really a clue to stop and add some oil. Or proceed at your own peril.

Oil is gravity fed to the very reliable mechanical oil pump. Which almost never fails. Gravity never fails. It is always there. Gravity and sudden stoppage hurts now when I jump off of a ladder from above the bottom rung.

If the mechanical pump were to fail the motor could very well seize from a lack of oil.

The lights are a convenience. Being behind the operator for the most part they are not readily seen. They can be tested. See below:

OK so then it is nothing more than a gauge so to speak. I will have to be diligent in filling/checking the oil tank when fueling then. Thanks for the test info also. I plan to check it out this weekend. Thanks
