    Digital Tach and LCD Marine Meter Wiring

    I have a '99 Ox66 225hp. Have just rewired the entire boat and hooking gauges back up. I labeled all wires before dissembling but I find myself with a few wires that I don't know what to do with.

    On the LCD gauge, I have the white/blue stripe wire which I understand goes to the fuel sender. It has a bullet connector and I don't remember this wire being hooked up. I am installing a new tank with a Wema sender with a white and black wire. I assume the white/blue stripe is connected to the white wire on the sender and the black goes to ground on the buss???

    The LCD also has two wires, a black and a white (maybe gray) that have been tied back. Never looked like they were used. The white (gray) has a female bullet connector and the black a male. Do I need to do anything with these?

    On the tach, I have a blue, yellow and black wire, all with bullet connectors. I understand the blue and yellow are for lighting the gauge. Do I hook both to the nav switch or one or the other? I have also read where you can connect them to each other???

    I also assume I need to clip the bullet connectors and use the appropriate ends. Any help is appreciated.

    If anyone is interested and after much research the black wire on the Wema sender is the wire that connects to the white/blue stripe wire on the LCD gauge. The white wire off of the sending unit goes to the pink wire (if you have one) to ground.

    That leaves the question of the yellow and blue wires off of the tach. Can anyone answer this question?

      from what I've seen, yellow is "ignition" - that is to say, "power with key on"
      and blue is night time illumination - backlighting.

      So an electronic gauge needs the yellow power to "work"
      and the blue can either be connected to a switch - i.e. nav lights
      or tied in with the yellow to be "always on when the key is on"


      I am curious what this "LCD gauge" is:

      A Yamaha "digital speedometer"?

        Thanks for the reply fairdeal....to answer your question this gauge does many things.....speedometer, trip,. time, fuel, temperature, voltage.

        The tach on my boat will also show trim angle, rpm and oil level

          The early Yamaha digital display tachometer was known as an LCD Marine Meter. It had round connectors, not the square ones used today.


          Same with the speedometer. This was all before Rodnuts time.

            BINGO Boscoe...that's it. I think I have figured out the remaining wires and colors using a 2012 wiring diagram. It makes sense but there is the one wire that just doesn't fit.

            The two wires that were tied back on the LCD appear to go directly to the sender. This was a black and a gray. The black has a male bullet and the gray a female connector. The blue and yellow look like they tie in to the ignition switch.

            If this is correct that leaves me with this white/blue stripe wire that stumps me. I've read where this wire may be the one that goes to the sender but that leads me back in circles.

            I can't find a wiring diagram that would fit a late 90's/early 2000 system.

              Those meters are for 1993 and earlier model Yams.

                Boscoe ......I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HELP. This makes a lot of sense. This gauge was used on an earlier Yamaha I had on it back in the 80's. It was repowered the 90's with the current engine.

                I am amazed at the information you share with us backyard mechanics. Again, many thanks.
