  • Yamaha T8 wiring help needed

    Good Day.

I recently purchased a used 8 hp High Thrust outboard, along with a separate Yamaha remote control unit and am having difficulty attaching everything correctly. Since it doesn't have a tiller or pull start, I am entirely dependent on battery power.
First off - would be great if someone could post an actual photo of the appropriate battery lead connections to the motor itself.
I guessed on the first go-round but think I got something wrong.
I connected the negative lead to one of the larger bolts at the top of the starter. And the positive lead I connected to a 2-bolt bar to the left (front) of the motor which had a few red leads running to it. Am pretty sure one or the both of those was incorrect and am looking for some guidance.
Power tilt/trim worked fine - both on the motor itself and from the remote unit.
and the starter worked from the remote, however it didn't stop when I turned the key off, so I had to quickly detach the negative battery lead in order to stop the starter from turning. Any help (in the form of photos) would be greatly appreciated. Last thing I want to do is have the engine fire up and the starter continue to run.

Also - on the remote wiring harness, I wasn't able to perfectly match up each of the wires coming into the cowling from the remote. I tried to connect like colors, but wasn't able to match up each one exactly. Specifically, I have 2 red wires with bullet connectors coming in (or one red and one brown perhaps (I am a bit color challenged)) but there weren't enough open reds available from the rows of wires nested on the side of the motor, so it seems I have an extra red? Which of course I temporarily jumped to the positive battery lead in order to bring power in. ugh.
I feel like I'm close, since at least the motor will turn over but I know something just isn't right.
Tried googling wiring diagrams but am having difficulty finding the right one for my remote unit / outboard combo and honestly think pictures would be much easier for me to follow.
Does anyone have a similar setup who would be willing to snap some pictures for me?
    Many thanks in advance.
