  • Vibration and alarm

    1995 Yamaha 150TXRT

I'm out on the water, maiden voyage, we came out of the harbor fine came up on plane and I noticed a vibration. Kind of like a bump bump bump. Slowed down and it went away. Sped back up and it came back. Did that a couple of time and I got a warning buzzer, everything flashing. As soon I dropped the RPMs the buzzer stopped. I am out on the water now. Any ideas?

    Thanks!!

It's sorta hard to say for sure but the first thing I'd do is raise the motor and check prop and lower unit for some rope or weeds or something fouling that area...

There are 2 alarms, low oil and high temp. Audible buzzer, rpm reduction to below 2k, and a visual indicator on the tach with a flashing bar over the oil or temp symbol. Which of these 2 symbols had a flashing bar?

They were all flashing. I don't believe it was a temp because as soon as I throttled down the audible alarm stopped and an everything stopped flashing. My experience with the temp alarm is that it will stay on until the engine cools down. I took the engine cover off and the oil tank was at fill up to the minimum line. Could that be the issue? Usually when I turn the key I hear the oil pump going. Also, there was no obstruction on the lower unit.
        Thanks

I wonder what a vibrating motor might do to electrical connections that are loose?

I will check that. Do you think it would suddenly stop when I powered down. I was able to make it back to the dock at slow speed with out any issues.
            Thank you!

A couple of things you said need clarifying, you said the oil was at minimum?? that will cause an alarm and RPM reduction, then you said when you slow down, the alarm goes off, but in your experience this is not indicative of an overheat, it is very common for blocked water passages to cause an overheat at higher RPM, but return to normal once you slow down, all that said, "everything" flashing (if correct) can be a clue!

Boscoe...does the above apply to both command link AND older style round gauges?

Usually when I get an over heat alarm it stays on until the engine cools down. So if I turned the engine off and turned the key to power, it would still sound without even starting the engine.

Does not apply to Command Link engines. They are all 2006 and later.

Applies to older style motors as shown. 1990 ~ 1995 115 thru 220 HP.

In older tachometers the three lights will illuminate. In later tachometers the three icons will flash.
