  • F225 TXRA (2002) Starting problems

Tried to fire up the STB engine, after the self check horns nothing happened. I worked the shiftier back and forth, it appeared as if the safety neutral switch was keeping it from starting. Again nothing.
Swapped the plugs from the key switch and the problem remained w/ the STB. engine.

Is there any source of a circuit diagram , or trouble shooting chart so i can attempt to find the problem.

the service manual has a wonderful full color foldout diagram.

Check all your connections between the battery and engine as well. Mine exhibited the same behavior. Turned out to be a V issue due to corrosion in the bilge where the Yam cables mated to the battery cables. Once cleaned, greased and covered with Fluid Film it starts every time.

this past winter all battery connections were rebuilt,, all bilge wires replaces... will check again...
Would love to purchase a service manual specific to these engines... where/ link?

I did see a small switch which is actuated by the gear cable, is it normally open or closed?

why are you looking at a small switch that has noting to do with engine cranking?????

have you checked for voltage at the start relay????

insert the knife between the second and third rib.

well given the fact the symptoms are similar to having the engine in gear while trying to start, I was looking for an apparent interlock (switch actuated by shifter movement) ,,, i guess that point was not addressed in Certified Mechanic school ... maybe it was in the customer relation class ....

from what you have stated you have eliminated the key switch by swapping the wiring, so you need to know if the proper voltage is getting to the start relay and then work your way back if need be.

your local Yamaha dealer can get you the service manual for your motor.
or look it up on the Yamaha web site and do some searching on the web

Just saw your post, and the neutral start safety switch is in the control box not on the motor

you can look all you wish but the F225 has no interlock switch on the motor.
the only one is on the control box.
remove the air box and test the start relay.

keyswitch applies power to brown wire
brown wire goes to control box
through neutral switch, goes to brown wire in 10 pin harness to engine
at engine brown wire goes to starting relay, whose coil is grounded
closed relay connects power from small brown/white wire to large brown/white
large brown/white goes to starter solenoid, whose coil is grounded

Thanks,,,, will go pull air box and stop looking for interlock switches...

                      sucess

well,,, success, The removal of the air box and relay cover did not indicate any thing wrong, no corrosion, no burn wires,,, looked great. I was alone so i did'nt have any one handy to turn the key while i measured the voltage on the brown wire.
While waiting for help, i began to look behind the dash. I found the safety neutral switch an they checked good, i then found the wires from the key and unplugged the connectors and looked for a problem.. found a blue wire that possibly was not making contact and re plugged the connectors together a couple times..

                      well it started working ...

make sure your harness plugs and fuses are well connected..

blue wire is simply gauge lights.
you may have found the issue you may have masked the issue.
that is why a tad o knowledge.
                        a diagram.
                        a DVM all help.

This is a plug for gratitude and to confirm that this service helps. Basically had the same problem with my 2001 225. Was looking at the console, the motor and the bilge considering what to logically check/ test/ service/ replace next. Read Sailorboy's post about what worked. Opened the 8-pin connector back of the key ignition switch. Prongs and receps were only slightly green. Cleaned all as best I could with mini rat tail file & wife's emory nail file --- wiped/ filled receps with dielectric using those tiny little dental gum brushes ---- really wasn't expecting much ---- fired right up / problem solved. Would probably have done 10 other items first had I not read this blog. Prompted me to finally sign up. BTW I use dielectric on all my connectors ---- I put a little bit in all butt connectors using a small syringe --- having typed this out for the first time I gotta say it now looks a bit perverted.
