  • Yamaha F250 OCV

I have a triple f250 setup on my boat, motors have about 700 hours, two of the motors when cold starting make a noise like a dry bearing for just a few seconds until oil starts pumping. The third motor does not. Could this be the OCV filter or valve leaking , once started for the day it doesn't seem to do it again all day. I had a set before that did the same for years before I sold. Had over 2500 hours with no major problems .
Anyone know what thks could be? Starter bendix sticking?

    thanks

Will do, thanks. Is the ocv a check valve? Does it keep the oil pump from loosing prime maybe bleeding down?

OCV filter. New one to me. Learn something every day.

Wonder if Fairdeal has some research

Just a though, do you use Yamaha oil filters?
use of some others may let oil drain out of filter so it takes longer to build pressure maybe

Fairdeals motor doesn't have an OCV. Or an OCV filter. If it did he would have changed it by now. Maybe twice. With 8X10 glossy colour photos with words and descriptions on the back.

This filter relates to Yamaha models that have variable intake timing on the intake cam shaft. The filter is for the oil control mechanism that varies the cam shaft as it relates to the crank shaft.

2006 and Later F250TXR Yamaha Outboard CYLINDER CRANKCASE 3 Diagram and Parts

My Ford F150 pick up truck has variable intake cam shaft timing. If non-synthetic oil is used the cam shaft drive mechanism will rattle like crazy. Can be clearly heard if up next to a building. Use synthetic oil and it makes not a peep.

My 2014 F150 with the 5L V8 came with synthetic blend oil and has got that at the oil changes.

Are you using a full synthetic oil Boscoe?

I believe mine has the OCV and I have not heard any rattles or knocks

So the solenoid shown basically shoves oil back and forth to change the timing. I was aware of the variable timing but did not know how it functioned.

Ford Motorcraft 5W-20 semi-synthetic is what I now use. Tried Dino oil and got the tapping. Semi-synthetic, tapping went away.

Thanks for the explanation. Oil flows based on engine oil pressure. Solenoid operates the valve to advance and retard timing. Now I know!

and the filter is on the return oil side not the supply side.
                              there is a maint intraval.
never gets done but Yamaha printed it.
one version is about 76 bucks a filter.
the later filters are like 9 bucks.
