  • Tach, volt meter, fuel guage not working 2003 2 stroke 200hp

Tach is intermittent, no voltage shown, fuel guage shows tank is full
All are related to engine wiring harness. they do back light.

All "boat" wiring works, horn, bilge pump, nav lights etc.

I have pulled the console and cleaned all connections... at helm

Big red flag, there are two fuse connections both red in color in the console end of harness. One has a broken fuse and the other is NOT connected and and has no fuse. What is the appropriate fuse size for these two connections.

For the last couple of years the voltage would drop on tilt use. I am guessing bad ground?

fuel guage has nothing to do with engine harness.
other than that I have no idea what 200 HP yamaha we are discussing.
a full model number would help about now.

      SX200TXRB - 2003 / i think
2 stroke, salt water series, remember the tx... live in texas

yes, on the fuel gauge, i "see" the sensor through a access port... or it may be a damn vent line.

just weird they all are acting up together...

what control box is used ?
where are the "red" fuse holders?
Yamaha never used red fuse holders gray and black yes,red no.
now that we know what we are discussing the ign 20 amp fuse for the power TO the console is in a black box just below the starter.
        20 amp.
the other two fuses one is for the engine charging system the other for the isolator circuits.

the wire colors at the tach/speedo.
        yellow=key on 12v+.
        black=ground.
        red is constant 12v.
        dark blue is lighting.
        dark green is tach send.
        orange,if used is a 5V ref.
        gray is overheat visual.
pink, not to be confused with the pink in the ten pin ign harness, is trim send.

          boatb.jpg

one photo shows rear of console instruments.
left top... water speedo... so what
          right top... tach
          left bottom... voltage
          right bottom... fuel

note all the jumpering between the boat circuits and the wiring harness.
all four of these come on from ignition circuit.

i believe the wiring from the harness to the wiring madness in the console is the issue
the inline fuses run from the console to the stern...

hand shows inline fuses to stern... not sure of their purpose

seapro did a ******x wonderful job of wire management

my machine wont open the photos.
now that I know it is a seapro I also know it was rigged with the cheapest cwapola gauges avaible.
my 21 seapro had the same when I got it.
now it has Yamaha command link and the correct rigging.
once 99 or someone else opens and posts the picture I can give more detail.

                  99 is da man
someplace there is a connector at the helm that will marry the seapro custom harness to the Yamaha 10 pin main.
tach send on the Yamaha stuff is dark green, the seapro stuff it is grey.

12v+ key on on the Yamaha stuff is yellow, the seapro stuff it is purple.
                  black is black for both.
dark blue on the Yamaha ten pin is for choke and is not used on your motor.
sea pro uses light blue for guage lighting.
I cannot remember what color the trim send wire was on the seapro stuff but for the Yamaha stuff it is the pink wire in the 4 wire harness from the engine to the console.
NOT the pink wire in the IGN harness.
your engine/console does not use the 5V orange ref wire in the 4 pin harness.

Thanks gents, I think i had the last year seapro had the gelcoat interior... real t-top etc. nice boat... the stuff has worked for 13 years... and I treat it gentle... lol.

I did the unspeakable and left it in the slings for a year uncovered. hence the problems... used it at least once a week all year round before that, now i am paying the price.

The info on the two harness's makes so much sense. i have enough wire to have the helm 75 feet from the motor. I have the Chinese to redneck translation table now.

I posted a larger pic of these two fuse links under the console. Not sure the amps of the fuses?... and with all that Italian food I really can't chase wtx the dang things go... any guess'?boatd.jpg

                        thanks yam...
put a piece of welding rod in there and give it a go eh?
run out of galveston and freeport. wiring gets more g's than an f-16.

I would start with some fuses, do not want to let the smoke out of everything.

need to trace wires to see what the fuses feed.

I live in Clute Tx. right up from Freeport
most of the offshore boats I fished out of in the past have been sold off.
I mainly fish East Matagorda Bay now a days.
less cost and time for plenty of fish

                            KELLY_ANN_FB.jpg

Her main purpose is NOT offshore, i did crossings and 10k miles racing blow boats offshore. I KNOW what a beating is. She is a compromise hull. 14 degree's deadrise. Now you pick either 6-8 or 20+, flats or offshore. Came with T-top, leaning post, removable cushions for 10, twin live wells, two ice boxes, salt water washdown, hydralic steering etc. You are "in" her, and can walk all over the boat always with a hand hold.

The hull can get you home, I have brought her in getting caught out 40 miles in 12's. Don' go "out' in gulf in more than 2-3', i pick the day, not the date. Multi use due to dead rise, offshore, pleasure for guest for fireworks etc., wake boarding.

She runs 44 knots, burning 8 gallon/hr wide open. 85 gallon tank, so "possible" 400+ range. Added twin batteries, perko switch, put oil tank in hull, racor filter with bowl in hull. Damn nice rig.

I live on a bayou, can be in galveston bay 15 min run to Eagle point or a 45 minute run to end of Jetty's. 45 to board walk in Kemah.

I didn't run her for a year, which is why i have all this BS. normally i took her out once a week year round. On true cradle lift, sitting on her keel in backyard. 10 minutes from getting home to out of slip.

The "double" harness BS is the root cause of all the wiring mess. never have liked all the extra wiring coiled up in hull and under console. But i have left things damn well alone.

Tach, shows some rpms, low then after 20 minutes or so, gets to correct rpms... 5400 propd out.

two SHAKE DOWN cruises, and these issues are the last of it. Inspection port under console "should" be sending unit for tank. I DON'T want to unseat it as I have never had fuel leaks. I really don't think it is bad. I think the fuse may be the issue, Just damn weird to have tach, and two other guages out due to setting up. Just feel like I have a ground issue...

Tach will probably work itself out running the damn boat.

but the FUEL GUAGE is an fn issue. Would love to put in flow meter... but I know the fuel guage well after 10 years... shows completely full... no fn way... i can't get from the fuel dock home and still have her full.

Could that power fuse be the lead from the batteries for the voltage meter?
And effect the signal voltage for the tank?

That one photo showing the back of the displays has the voltage meter and fuel gauge on bottom. I don't see a "common" wire issue there.

Guessing here... 12 volt, 10 amp, old school glass fuses and then go up on fuses?... I will probably have to cut and replace that broken one due to damn fuse stuck in the connection point.

                            Thanks guys
I am usually pretty self sufficient, but my wife has been on enough shake down cruises to KNOW BETTER. And the cluster f' of the wiring is a month long chase that I do NOT want to start. My choice would to buy both harness' and start over, they are almost 15 years old. But... If it works...

Again thanks for all the help, any other idea's or guess' would be greatly appreciated

those two fuses are for something in the hull, not the engine.

8 gallons per hr at WOT with a two stroke 200??
                              I call total BS.
                              cannot happen will not happen.
20 GPH at WOT I will buy.
I have seen it with a flow meter.
my F150 on my 21 seapro smokes 15.5 at 5700.
my seapro has a 2nd station, jackplate, lenco tabs and makes about 40 mph at 5700 buring about 15.5GPH according to the command link fuel monitor.

they are nice hulls. mine is an 04 and I have had it in some serious sloppy stuff.
