I recently purchase a 2005 Stratos SF with a 2005 Yamaha VMax 150. Not being a boat guy I took it to local shop for inspection. They told me everything was good but third trip out the lower unit went out.. with a loud bang that sounded like a rod knocking in a regular engine. I checked it once I got home.. there was barely any gear lube in the lower unit and tons of metal. The unit has not leaked any oil. To say the least I am very frustrated with the shop that was supposed to take care of me.. but for sure they have lot my business for ever.

Thanks for listening to my vent.. now onto the most important part... I am able the handle of the rebuild of this.. just wondering if there are any special tools that are needed to get it apart and what might be suspect part that went bad or usually goes bad in the lowers of these..

    Thank you for helping...

If you are sure its the lower unit you may just do an exchange.

the service manual for your motor will have the steps needed take apart and put back together, along with what tools would be needed and the specs.
but it in not written for people not familiar with the motor.
      Mainly for trained/experienced Yamaha techs

I also depends on what all got toasted in there.
if the aluminum housing was damaged there is not much that can be done to repair that.

Need to take apart to see
