  • smoked the r/r on a 02 F80B

Hello folks and thanks for the forum,

As with most people on here i have found my way to this site because my Yahama has failed me, after 13 years of low to moderate use. Here is my tale of whoa.

Recently I noticed the battery was losing its charge, at only 3 years old I found this odd and brought it to Autozone to have it load tested. It passed but I bought a new battery anyway hoping for the best. It again failed and I knew i had an electrical issue. Thanks to the forum i figured it was the r/r and went about trying to remove it this morning (the boat is in the water, I live on a river and the nearest boat ramp is 8 miles).
I had removed most of the shrouds and could see the r/r but i still had one more piece to remove (air box?) so I could get to the bolts holding the r/r , this proved to be tough so I thought I would put the terminals back on battery for a moment and adjust the trim so I could get at it better. Soon as I placed the terminals on the posts the r/r smoked, and caught on fire, just as many in the forum had mentioned. I was able to put it out quickly.

My question, what are the chances that I only fried the r/r and not other components or what components may I also have affected? I will be taking the boat out of the water to work on it now, I assume at this point I will need a tow as I am afraid to put power back on the motor.

Looks like I'll be working some OT to pay for this baby so I won't be on the damn boat anyway

    Thank you for your help.

I am not familer with a F80, but some motors had the CDI/ECU right above the RR that can get damaged from the RR fire

If you put the fire out quickly chances are that the ECU is not damaged. Let's hope so. You might want to inspect the wire harness to the ECU since it is at the bottom of the ECU and immediately above the R/R.

      Let us know please.

And you now know better than many to first disconnect a failed/failing unit before attempting to do any further work on the motor. Lesson learned.

Sounds like he should have disconnected the RR before hooking the battery back up to raise the motor some with the T&T, but from what he wrote he needed to raise the motor to take off other parts before he could get to the RR to disconnect it. kind of a catch 22 type of thing.

I am now wondering where that phrase" catch 22 "comes from

My mind kind of wanders some times.
Did I get the right word ( wanders) this time?

Catch-22 is a satirical novel by the American author Joseph Heller. He began writing it in 1953; the novel was first published in 1961.

The novel is set during World War II, from 1942 to 1944. It mainly follows the life of Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier.

The novel's title refers to a plot device that is repeatedly invoked in the story. Catch-22 starts as a set of paradoxical requirements whereby airmen mentally unfit to fly did not have to do so, but could not actually be excused. By the end of the novel it is invoked as the explanation for many unreasonable restrictions.

The phrase "Catch-22" has since entered the English language, referring to a type of unsolvable logic puzzle sometimes called a double bind. According to the novel, people who were crazy were not obliged to fly missions; but anyone who applied to stop flying was showing a rational concern for his safety and, therefore, was sane.

I am wondering about your mind wandering. But not with my mind.

I miss my mind. It was a terrible thing to have lost.

              round 2

              Thanks for the replys all,

The ECU is right above the r/r but it looks like i got the fire out before it was damaged, wiring harness looks good. What a b#@$tch to get the r/r removed, the 'air box' covers one of the bolts and it is held in place by at least 10 bolts some of which cannot be accessed without removing other parts. Long story short the boat is in my yard and the r/r on my work bench. So i will be ordering a new r/r my next question, when I look up the part there are 2 part numbers for the r/r. 67F-81960-12-00 and 67F-81960-10-00, how do I know which one to order? Of course there is no p/n on the r/r.

Thanks again and happy fathers day to all!

so the part numbers corespond with the serial number on the engine. I ordered the part and will let the forum know if it fixed my issue.

any installation hints? seems pretty straight forward although I will be a little leery when I do put the juice to the circuit for the first time.
