  • FSM model cross 2002 TXRA

    2002 150TXRA

Ok, so I finally figured out the fuel idle issue I was having (a clog in the pilot air passage of one barrel) and want to get everything set back to factory specs on the motor. Can someone please confirm that my model number crosses with the 'S150TR' settings that are in FSM LIT-18616-02-01.

If you believe it crosses differently please provide supporting data/reasoning. I've asked this question to multiple mechanics and have gotten multiple answers...none of which land on the same model number as I see crossing in the FSM.

It all stems from Yamaha crappy data. It is what it is.

To make it more confusing, here is a page from a Yamaha tune up specifications book that shows a different idle mixture setting for the 150 than for the S150. Maybe use it as a tie breaker.

If you take the SM tolerance of plus or minus 1/4 turn one could surmise the settings to be mostly the same. Play with the idle mixture screw adjustment and find what works best for your motor.

The pilot screws I am sure is 1 1/4 +/- 1/4 as my carbs are stamped w/ 64CS and jets are stamped per the S150TR. I am concerned w the deltas from TDC and mechanical linkage lengths on pages 3-3 to 3-6. Being that I got a bunch of different answers regarding the model cross reference I did make adjustments to those...so I just want to get it back to factory specs.

I agree, the different naming conventions for model number certainly makes things difficult.

I am confused. You have a 150A model. Not an S150A model.

            What am I missing?

I'm missing it too....that is why I am asking. I have heard (question 3 OB mechanics...one of them cert'ed yamaha) that I have a '150' (a non alpha character 150 does not parse in the config tables of the FSM), '150A', 'C150', and I see the manual crossing as 'S150TR'. I completely agree I have the base low end 2002 oil injected carbed model. I've attempted to cross my FSM w/ a Seloc and Clymer and none of them have a clear cross reference. Note in the parlance of the FSM a '150A' and 'C150TR' are both premix motors, different carbs etc... I've gone down the road of 'Ok, the FSM cross reference has an error, set the timing per whatever the Mech says' but have lost confidence in that was a correct move. So I just want to set it per factory specs.

Pure and simple the SM is confusing at best and screwed up at worst. The manual you are looking at is dated 1998.

                You have a 2002 150TXRA.

There was no S150TXRA offered in the US in 2002. There was no C150 offered in the US in 2002. Last year for these models was 1999. Just after the year in which your manual was published.

Ever heard the old adage "you can't get there from here". I think you are here.

What specifications precisely are you looking for? I might can find some data for you. Rodbolt might be able to say what specs he would use.

Thanks, I appreciate you pulling data to try and help me get to the bottom of this. I am completely perplexed on how something so fundamental as 'how do I do I cross my motor to the FSM tables for step yadda yadda' gets to the 'you can't get from here' empass. I imagine this is why I have gotten multiple answers from OB mechanics and as an unfortunate result have adjusted the timing screw stops/linkage lengths etc... So, this why I just want an evidence based approach to get me back to factory settings.

Some things I think we can agree on. The first edition of the FSM was written in '98. I bought mine in '14 and it identifies models that didn't exist in '98 so it's safe to assume I have a later/most likely latest version of this document. It's pretty self evident Yamaha used different 'intelligent' model numbering schemes across their different documents. From their perspective it makes sense since they doing configuration management of a worldwide distribution of engines. Clear visibility into that system's decoder ring is probably based on the intent of who is using it...meaning FSMs were intended to be used by Yamaha employees/Cert'ed techs etc. where it matters more, owners manuals for Joe Blow consumers where it matters less. There is confusion/danger in applying the intelligence of a cross reference of one document to a different document.

You're stating the 2002 150TXRA is a 150A which conflicts w/ the FSMs cross reference. I believe you are getting the 150A from the naming convention on the owners manual LIT-18626-04-57, correct? You're stating it is not a S150TR because the 'S' prefix denotes a Salt Water Series per an example cross reference http://www.maxrules.com/fixyamahamodels.html which was not available in model 2002, correct? Don't worry, I am right there agreeing with you....but to come to the conclusion that we use 150A in the FSM we are using 3 different cross references. Are we committing the same mistakes that got me into this mess?

The specifics I am looking for are the timing inspection and adjustment specs (BTDC/ATDC and tming stop screws/linkage lengths in sections 3-3 to 3-6 of FSM LIT-18616-02-01.

Thanks again, I do appreciate it.

My head is hurting. I take back what I said about your model being a 150A model. I now believe it to be a 150F model. F as in 150FETO.

Does this make sense? Reason why I say this is because the third page of the SM makes reference to six Model Names for the 150 HP models. (1) 150AET, (2) L150AET, (3) 150FETO, (4) L150AETO, (5) 150GETO, and (6) D150HETO are listed. But only four different suffix letters are used. A, F, G and H.

Now when we look at the data shown on pages 3-3 thru 3-6 we see four letter codes used for the 150 HP models. A, F, G and H. Using the F suffix here is what I come up with as the specifications to which the motor was set at the factory. Does this agree with what anyone has told you?
