    F225 starting problem intermittent

    I have an intermittent starting problem. I have 12 volts to all system on the boat. I have 12 volts to the engine block. When I turn the ignition key nothing.
    When I trim the motor up an down a bunch of times engine starts and runs fine.

    When I brought the motor in to be repaired to a Yamaha dealer they said the wire harness where the control harness meets the engine harness wasn't making good contact. Repluged and engine tested fine. 2 1/2 fishing trips later after being towed in by seatow at the launch raised the engine 4 inches engine started. Loaded the boat raised the engine to travel home and when I got home turned the key and nothing.

    Sounds like an internally broken wire that likely goes to at least the starter relay (color IDK).

    When you raise and lower the engine, your making your starter/ignition "connection" with that bad wire.

    Backyardian approach, get a helper, put the engine on muffs(with water). When its acting up (not cranking), gently start manipulating the wires, (while trying to crank with the key) especially in the area where the harness "bunches up" when trimmed up.

    When it cranks, you know your in the area of the broken wire that needs attention...

    You issue is a broken wire in that area....

    Please post back what you find.

    Others will chime in which wire to focus in on but it shouldn't be hard to find..

      Chime time here.

      The brown wire is the wire in the ten pin harness that provides 12 volts to the starter motor relay.

      I presume that the issue is when the key is turned to the start position that the starter motor energizing and cranking the motor is the intermittent part.

      First try and determine if it is on the engine side harness or the boat side harness.

        F225 starting issue.

        The problem was in the wire harness plug.
        Final solution cut the wire harness plug completely out and soldered
        All the wires than heat shrunk them.
        Problem resolved.
