    Rigging 2000 OX 250

    New to the forum and only a Yamaha owner for less than a year.

    I removed and sold a 1988 Yamaha Excel 225 from my boat. I replaced that engine with a 2000 Yamaha 250 OX66. The boat, a restored 1988 mako 211, has perfect wiring which I am fearful of messing up. I have a harness and oil tank that came with the 250 purchase.

    1. Any issue in using the original 10 pin wiring harness?

    2. The original owner installed a newer oil tank, not blue plugs. Can I use tank if I wire direct?

    3. Any way to get around pulling instrument/trim harness? The boat currently has round plugs, not square. Was given newer key switch/harness with new engine.

    4. Will existing Yamaha single binnacle work, the shift/throttle cables look the same

    5. Can the existing harness be used?

    6. I have purchased a new support rod for the sea star and a new Yamaha rigging adapter to thread the rigging tube.

    7. The engine is on a stand being prepped for painting

    Any advice would be appreciated

    you can buy the round to square harness adapters.
    the trim function may or may not work.
    I cant remember when the 3.1L motors went to a 2 wire trim sender.
    controls and 10 pin will work.

        Rigging

        Progress:
        Paint and clear coat go on the engine tomorrow. (2000 or 2001, Yamaha 250 OX66)

        1. Oil tank had the same number and colored wires. I spliced the new plug on the old harness with waterproof connectors.

        2. My existing trim/tilt from the single binnacle is wired into the main harness.

        3. Pulled the new square (2) plug harness to the console, leaving the old round plug harness hooked up for reference. The previous owner took the wires and ran them to multiple Yamaha gauges. The wires are all soldered and shrink wrapped. All gauges worked.

        a. Can I take the new harness, remove the square plugs and match the wires so the instruments continue to work? Does anyone know which colors on the old harness match up with the new wires? Old colors black, orange, pinkish, gray(green?). Second old harness one yellow, yellow w/red stripe, green and green w/red stripe. These lead right into the instrument package.

        4. If there is an adapter that plugs in with bare ends with the old colors let me know the part number.

          the engine has square connectors.
          the new tach should have square connectors.
          both ends of your trim/oil harness have square connectors.
          I am not following what your asking.

            Sounds to me like the OP has a modified configuration. What one might refer to as a bastard red headed orphaned step child. Who knows (I don't) what the modified configuration is.

            If I don't know where one is, I can't being to give directions as to where he should go. Is he south of me, north of me, east of me or west of me?

              Sorry I'm not clear, the plugs on the guages were removed, probably to facilitate running the 1988 engine into the guages. I can't plug them in. I need to match the corresponding new wires to the guages and the colors don't match.
