  • Startup problems after running.

I have a 2003 VMAX 200 - VX200TLRB. I recently installed new fuel line, primer (Yamaha), and a water/fuel separator (Yamaha), and I started having this problem shortly after...

The motor starts fine at first, runs great, but after a run and fishing a spot for 30+ minutes I have startup problems. The motor cranks but doesn't start up. It sounds like it isn't getting fuel. I tried priming it, but it doesn't help much. The motor will evening start after 5 (or more) attempts.

After the problem started, I changed the spark plugs, didn't help.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe an air leak somewhere in the fuel lines that you just replaced?...there is an O-ring in that quick disconnect on front of cowling that might be leaking. Your new primer bulb should be installed with the arrow towards the motor indicating the flow.

include in your checking, all four of the ports on that fuel/water seperator...

sounds like there is a over rich condition, possibly from fuel vapor in the intake, have you tried to raise the idle control lever a little to get more air into the motor during these conditions of hard to start.

Yamaha does recommends idling for a little bit after a hard run to help cool off the motor some before shutting it off.

I double-check all of my fuel lines. Everything to the filter was teflon'd. The line ends are push completely on and clamped properly.

I don't have a idle control lever on my console, it is just a throttle.

Anything else I could check? I read somewhere else this could related to a low pressure fuel pump. Is that possible?

          Thanks again for the help.

Does it have the button you push in on throttle lever to advance the throttle without putting it in gear?

No. Only a trim/tilt switch. Here's the throttle lever...I have a hotfoot too.

Ran it today. Still having the same issues...tried squeezing the ball before starting, no good. Could it be my low pressure fuel pumps?

                  ok
fuggit about the primer and lines.
the VST holds enough fuel to run at idle for many minutes.

could a lift pump be causing hot restart issues?
yep, especially if it smokes like a mad dog on a hot restart.

also a bad battery cable/connection can cause a hard hot restart.

if the VST vent system is allowing vapors into the intake at hot shut down it will cause a hard hot restart.

a quick way to tell if its an over rich condition is press the hot foot just a bit and try starting it.
press to far and it shuts off the injectors(flood clear mode).

to much pressure on the fuel rail,or to little, will cause a hard hot restart.

                    I appreciate your help.

What is a lift pump? Is it this:

6E5-24410-03-00 YAMAHA FUEL PUMP ASY ?

Is there anyway for me to test it?

The battery tested good, I double-checked the cables/connections today.

When I replaced my fuel line, I changed out the yamaha high pressure fuel line that's in inside the motor (connects straight to fuel filter) with typical alcohol resistant fuel line.

Is there a difference between these 2 lines that could cause this?

This is the hose yamaha uses inside the motor:

Its in your shop manual how to test the lift pumps with a vacuum gauge.

Thanks will look into it...you don't think the fuel line I mentioned could be a problem?

I took off the bottom lpfp, squeeze the primer, nothing came out...i pull out the top one, squeezed the primer and gas came out the middle of the back side. Should I replace it?

If it is coming out of the pulse port that means the diaphragm is leaking.
I would replace both if one is bad
