  • 1985 Yamaha 9.9 four stroke will not idle

Our local youth sailing non-profit was given this engine as a donation...noting that it had not run in a few years. FT9.9EXK / 6G8 UL 780193. I have gone through the carb 3 times, using carb cleaner, air and phone wire in every little nook and cranny I can find using parts blow ups, changed the plugs, and changed the crankcase oil. If we restrict the air intake with a thumb it starts easily and runs at quite a high 'idle' as long as the air intake is carefully managed with a thumb. Pull the thumb away, and the engine dies unless at WOT, and even then it is not as smooth as when the air intake is thumb managed. I am not sure about this little fuel enrichment/starter plunger system on top of the carb below the little clear plastic bubble. The plunger does not seem to go up or down...what should this be doing?

    still won't run right

I took the bowl off again and took the float/needle valve apart and cleaned up all related parts and passages...still no go. Stick the thumb on the air intake, fires right up. If throttle is held at the high end of the neutral range, it rips right along, but as soon as you back off a little it dies. Any thoughts on which of these tiny little passages is the culprit? I did also notice tonight that the plastic plug on the bottom of the idle jet pipe has an o-ring that is flattened out and not holding tight...would that do it...seems to me like it would go the opposite and allow too much fuel to run up the pipe...

      automatic choke

It sounds as though the automatic choke is stuck. These caused a lot of trouble and were eventually replaced with a manual setup.
You are using your thumb as a, er, digital choke.
Does the engine run OK once warmed up?
If you do a search on here there is an explanation on how to check the automatic choke (its the black plastic cylinder on top off the carb).
