  • 93 115tlrr bogs and dies

93 115tlrr had it out running yesterday. Boat was up on plane without issue. Jumped off of plane to mess with my gps and when I went to speed back up motor would not go past 1900-2100rpm. If i tried to advance the throttle beyond that range, the motor will bog and die.

This issue is only when the boat is in forward. I ran it up to 4k in reverse just to see if it could do it, up to 5k in neutral with fast idle.

To me this says that I've got fuel, I've got spark and I've got compression. What I don't have is a clue what to look at to fix the issue.

    motor should not die,
I believe it is running out of fuel and dieing

      Here's your parts fisch for the carb(s);

1993 115TLRR Yamaha Outboard CARBURETOR Diagram and Parts

I would drain the carb float bowls and catch what comes out (I use a small CLEAN tuna fish can). Your looking for water, any debris, etc.

Did you check the under hood fuel filter for debris/water?

Has the engine sat for awhile W/O fuel stabilizer??

Do people still have tuna cans laying around to use with all the fresh fish that is available to catch now a days?

I must admit I still buy sardines in mustard sauce and an occasional can of tuna for quick fixes of fish to keep from having to break out the frier or blackening skillet

          Getting off track some but,

For a lunch sandwich and for a treat for the cat, absolutely! Working on a small engine on the work bench, they work great for keeping small screws, etc from getting lost.

I hate food shopping and the canned stuff lasts forever. I have one in the dock box, and two in the garage.

Took carbs off and cleaned about 2 weeks ago, checked again, still in good shape, no debris/water in fuel filter, fuel has been non-eth with a stabilizer in it.

Wouldn't a fuel/carb issue show itself at high rpm in neutral or reverse as well? What's confusing me is that it only happens in forward gear.....could it be the control?

It won't be in the control...

When you run in reverse(to the higher RPM's), is it as long a time as if you were in forward gear??

Revving in neutral without load is one thing, but in reverse you have load.

Still sounds like a fuel issue to me.

forward gear puts motor in more of a load in the water so needs more fuel to run properly

Two things, when you cleaned the carbs, did you physically pull all the jets out and visually inspect them? Just spraying carb cleaner doesn't count...

Second, did you JUST (since the issue) drain the float bowls and they are clean? Was the fuel cloudy at all?

When I put it in reverse it was only for about 5-10 seconds at 3500-4000 rpm. Forward wouldn't even let me get that far. Took the carbs all the way apart, jets and all. Ran all parts through sonic bath of dry cleaning solvent (pd 680) and reassembled.

No cloudy gas out of bowl. I found a couple of things today that I fixed and am going for a trial tomorrow (running out of daylight).

1 - in the control, the throttle control has a bushing that contacts some of the other linkage that had come off of the control lever. Ends up my friction adjustment had worked loose and allowed for a lot of slop. Wouldn't have had an effect on reverse since the lever makes hard contact in reverse/neutral and has to slide through for forward.

2 - The magneto control arm adjustment bolt (the one that sets distance from control linkage on the stbd side of the motor to the magneto) had worked it's way about 2 1/2 turns loose. Looks like the last person that had it decided the keeper spring and jam nut were unnecessary.

Seems like the first issue may just help with overall throttle response, but the second issue might be causing too much fuel to dump into the motor while not advancing the spark enough to keep up with the flow.

I'll let y'all know what I find after a trial tomorrow.

                      Great finds...

You should feel some difference with those findings / fixes.

Do you have a shop manual to check and set the timing correctly?

One member had the timing off some and the engine ran crappy. Adjusted it correctly and it ran great..

Good luck on the trial run!

                        Trial run done.

All issues fixed, resetting the timing advance screw fixed rough idle.

Between resetting that bushing inside my remote control and adjusting the friction tension the boat now has better throttle response than at any time during the 1 1/2 years I've owned it.

Result, that old 93 two stroke runs like a damned dream. Now to get out and catch some dinner.

Thanks for the help, and I hope this can help someone else in the future.
