  • Identifying lower unit

The lower unit is different than the origanal motor, is there a serial number on these to identify them? 1999 vmAx ox66 150. But the lower unit is different when ordering a new water pump I have to get the trp model kit.

The lower units do not have serial numbers.

What specific model motor do you have? Appears that it might now have a lower unit with contra rotating propellers but it did not come from the factory that way. Is that correct?

If so, then I would order a water pump kit for the Yamaha lower unit that was built to accommodate contra rotating propellers.

    For example,

That is the water pump kit I order, but my engine is a px150tldr. I now need a new prop and am trying to figure out which lower unit this is.

There is no model 1999 PX150TLDR. You need to double check what you have.

In 1999 Yamaha USA offered a PX150TLRX. This model came with a lower unit that used a single propeller.

In 1999 Yamaha USA offered a D150TLRX and a DX150TLRX, both of which came with a lower unit that used two propellers.

You were first talking about needing a water pump. Now you are talking about needing a propeller? Which is it?

If you have a TRP gear case then you will buy parts for a TRP gear case. If you have a conventional gear case you will buy parts for a conventional gear case.

I seem to be missing something here.

Sorry I am typing on an iPad in an airplane,
Let me explain, I am trying to identify which lower unit I have. I know it's not the original LU that came with my motor. My motor is a 1999 PX150tlrx. Several years ago when I bought the boat I ordered the water pump kit for the px150tlrx and what do you know it doesn't fit , not even close. So I started looking at parts diagrams to find which LU I have and so I can change my new to me water pump etc..., The water pump kit that fits my lower unit is from the dx150tlrx. So I am stumped. My lower unit has only one prop but the parts that fit are from the dx150tlrx. Now I need a new prop for my boat and want to figure out excatly which lower unit I have. I am running a 18.5 maverick master angler.

When it comes to propellers Yamaha only offers two basic types. One type for TRP gear cases and one type for normal gear cases. If you do not have a TRP gear case then you will just get a normal propeller. Yamaha or any other brand.

Is it possible to get a single prop on a trp gear case?

I guess you could install one of the two propellers. Why would anyone want to do that?

Sounds like you don't know what type of gear case you have. It should be pretty easy to determine just by looking.

However, there should be some markings down in the cavity of the gear case. A regular type would be a 6J9. A TRP type would be a 65N.

A TRP propeller looks nothing at all like a normal Yamaha propeller.

My old prop was stolen, now I am researching new props and would like to know which gear case I have. I will take a look when I get back home for those numbers. Also I'm guessing previous owner swapped LU and am curious which lower unit I got.

If you took off both of the trp propellers, could you put a standard single prop back on?

I do not think a regular prop would fit either of the shaft splins on a duel, but I have never looked at them myself so I could be wrong.

                      L stands for left turning
                      D stands for duel prop
not sure what the B would stand for as they have changed the parts link that used to tell us what all the stuff meant

I have never seen a trp either. But I cannot find a parts diagram that looks like my lower unit , except for the dx model. The only thing wrong with this is my lower unit only had a single prop on it. Now it has none thanks to some jack wagon who grabbed my prop off the boat.

He is wanting to buy a new prop for the lower that he does not know what motor it came off of

The Dx has two prop shafts one inside the other, so you can just look at the shafts to see if it has two or just one where a prop would spine onto it

The two gear case types are so obviously different that it should not even be a subject of discussion. If he was running with one propeller then he has a standard gear case. He does not need to know what model motor that gear case came from. They all use the same basic type of propeller.

Any Yamaha propeller that will fit a standard 150 HP gear case will fit any other 150 HP standard gear case.
