  • Oil transfer pump malfunction

I have a 2005 Yamaha 150 HP 2 stroke outboard motor. The oil transfer pump does not transfer oil from the reserve tank to the main tank to keep the main tank full. The pump will run using the backup switch on the back of the motor. The float switch in the main tank closes at full, empty and mid point.
    Any ideas?
    Would love some help.

Is there oil in the remote tank? If not, automatic transfer won't occur.

If there is oil in the remote tank, is the switch in that tank closing? Is there a good ground to that switch? Does that ground make its way all the way to the CDI? If not, no auto oil transfer.

Is the wiring from the main tank float assembly switch to the CDI working correctly? The middle switch closing tells the CDI to start the auto oil transfer function. But, if the CDI does not get the message because of a wiring or connection issue then guess what? Auto oil transfer won't happen.

There is more to electrics than just some switches closing and opening.

This never gets old does it? wait, yes it does, do a search on precision blend by rodbolt, this has been covered 1002 times now.

It is amazing how often this subject comes up.

As Rodnut sez, it is not a difficult system, if one takes the time to understand what is doing what and when.

At Yamaha US it is the most misunderstood subject of all. More Master Mechanic wannabees can't pass the test because of PBS.

the trim sensor is only used on 2.6Lv6 about 1994 and older.95 and later V6 do not use the trim sender for any oil transfer functions.

as it has been stated it has been covered many times. a search should get you info.

Good news is you have power to pump and pump will turn on and move oil.
all you need to find out is does the remote tank level switch and wiring function properly.
If oil module thinks there is not enough oil in the tank due to wiring or switch problems, auto transfer will not happen but you can pump with the e switch

gauges should indicate some info on oil if it is working
