    Shoddy maintenance costs mechanic big time

    $13 Million Judgment Against Mechanic For Crash - AVweb flash Article

    Pilot has the throttle in one hand and the control yoke in his other hand. Seat lock fails and seat slides rearwards. This causes him to pull back on the throttle and the yoke at the very worst time.

    This mechanic must be completely worthless. I image that long ago he lost his license and ability to make a living being an aircraft mechanic. He might have even done some jail time. But the same can happen to a perfectly competent mechanic who simply makes a mistake. And it can cost him big time.

    I remember my F-4 and F-15 days as a mechanic -- drop a washer down the wing root area and you would hear "pinkty, plink, plink, plinity, plink" followed by a few %&$#!, #$$**#! words.......
    Then for the next 3 hours you were on the bottom side of the aircraft pulling panels until you accounted for that washer! I wouldn't want to lose a multi-million dollar aircraft or worse, the life of a pilot -- and the higher-ups would rather you be honest when you would tell them what happened -- not only would they appreciate it they would give you extra mechanics to help you out.

      You kind of wondered off of the forums purpose I think.


      Try dropping a washer down inside a large transformer while replacing the primary bushings.
      I swear I did not do it, but I did get to help pull the core out after haveing the top cut off to get it out.
      loose metal inside a magnetic core winding will cause a big arc somewhere down the line once it eats through the insulation on the copper windings due to vibration even if it is not a magnetic metal

        It is about the importance of proper maintenance no matter what the product that is being worked on.

              had a cousin and his wife almost die some years back.
              they took off from Manteo airport and at about 150ft or so the engine seized and in the sound they dropped.
              engine had about 25 hrs since major overhaul.

              seems the tech had installed some updated sleeves using the incorrect procedure.

              its why proper training and correct procedures get critical sometimes.

                Nothing more dangerous than a doctor behind the controls of a Cessna.
                Let go of the control stick and the plane would have leveled out.

                  in my cousins case it simply would not have mattered.
                  witness say he made maybe 150 feet after take off and the engine simply locked up.
                  the sound is about 12ft deep.
                  he made it out his wife did not.
                  the wife did eventually survive but was technically dead when they retrieved her from the aircraft.
                  luckily some fisherman were close by and the manteo airport has a quick response water rescue craft.
