  • Question - Yamaha V4 115 2 Stroke

Hello all! Pretty new to ownership but a long time co-captain - just bought a GW 1997 with a 2001 V4 115 Yamaha 2 stroke. Love this rig and the motor has been a sheer pleasure to drive - it has 180 hours on it and is rock solid. I have 2 questions - both are probably no brainers for most of you and simple and very newish of me to ask so be understanding please that I am new to owning a boat and understanding outboards.

    1. I was detailing and cleaning my boat and noticed a clear line (looks like a vacuum or fuel line hose) that runs from the motor, just under the motor cover, transom side and it was spliced and split near where it enters the inside of the boat (battery and fuel bulb area). I have run the boat for about 20 hours or so and never noticed this split in the line - I replaced/repaired the break in the line and all seems well - I am just curios as to what that line is? I cant seem to find a description on the Yamaha parts and manual sites?

    2. The trim/tilt control on the boat remote control/throttle only works for trimming the motor down but does not work to tilt the motor up. I am quite handy with a wrench and wondering where i begin to determine if I can fix this and how to troubleshoot what issue may be.

Again thanks for the help and please excuse my newish questions - I am in learning mode. Greetz! James

Sounds like a speedometer line that runs up from the lower unit inside the leg to the speedometer unit...these lines are usually black rubber/neoprene but maybe your previous owner used the clear plastic for some reason?...

I am guessing that it is the pressure line for the speedometer.

There should be another trim and tilt switch on the side of the bottom engine cowling. Try the UP position and see if the UP trim works or not. If it works then I would suspect that the trim and tilt switch on the throttle handle has failed. A common issue. An upgraded switch is available. If this does not solve the problem get back here for more advice.

ah, the speedometer answer could be right as my speedometer (digital display) has not been functioning properly on my last 2 trips out - perhaps that is the cause? Replaced/repaired the line yesterday and will be out tomorrow to verify.

Will definitely try replacing trim switch as the manual button on motor works fine (failed to mention that in OP) - will report back if that does not fix.

Thanks for taking the time to answer - much appreciate the help!
