  • Taching a 2-stroke, 25 HP Yamaha 25ELH

I've got a 2007 model, 25ELH Yamaha outboard that I would like to hook a tachometer to the motor to get some WOT readings so I can get the best prop for this motor. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out where I need to splice the tach's sending wire into the wiring on the motor to get it to work. I think I am supposed to connect inline to the voltage regulator/rectifier, but I am not exactly sure where that is. Here is a pic of the wiring on my motor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

See those two green leads that are coming from under the flywheel and which go into a blue sheath? Those are the lighting coil leads which run to the rectifier. Follow those leads to wherever they take you. Looks to be under that round black plastic looking piece.

I can't think of why you cannot tap into one of those leads to pick up a tachometer reference signal.

Is it an inductive tacho? in this case you would just wind the wire around one of the high tension leads coming from the ignition coil.
