After running for a while I will turn off the engine and sit for a while fishing. Go to start the engine and there is no power to the starter, both batteries are less than 3 months old. If I take my portable jumper box an connect to the wiring harness leads from the battery to the connectors on the side of the block I get power and it will start. sometimes when I disconnect the motor dies and sometimes it continues to run. would replacing the original battery cable to the engine be the first thing, or should I look at something else?

In the damp marine environment it's a good idea to remove/inspect/clean/grease/tighten all electrical connections especially the starting circuit....battery cables, etc.,etc....

Testing would be the best thing to do.
Voltage drop test should lead you in the proper direction
Connections or cables themselves can be a problem.

So can new batteries if the charging system or other problems show up

        + 1 on both replys.

Also, if you have a Perko type, battery on/off/both switch, check that as well (the connections/contacts).

You have a bad connection/ground or bad wire somewhere making an intermediate connection... Pull (don't just look at) and check the ground cable to the engine, scape nice and clean (and of course both cables going to the battery)
