      Hi Ausnoelm,
      I opened it up cleaned the contacts, solenoids and everything else. Still getting stuck when I turn the key. It's like the bearing at the top just stops and doesn't want to turn over. The first turn of the key the starter will get stuck, the second turn will start.

      Regards
      Bash

        Should be an easy fix, any auto electrician will be able to fix it for a fraction of the cost of a complete new starter.

              Thanks. But I already tried that and my motor or model number doesn't come up!

                He's in Australia which is probably why it isn't coming up..

                BTW, what year is the engine and lastly, is it a roller/needle bearing or bushing in the starter where your having issues? You should be able to, by hand, if its a roller, check to see how well it rolls, (if at all). If its a bushing, some real good high temp grease should help..

                You can bench test it when you get it figured out, or just to confirm the starter is bad.

                  I don't think that's why hopefully not. Do I have to buy the exact same one? Can't I buy the starter from the same year model engine's?

                    Thanks for the reply. I've uploaded pictures of the serial number and starter motor. It's a four stroke but have no clue what your saying about the starter. Hope that helps and thank you again for the help.

                      Looks like a 2003 Oceanic or Japanese model.

                        The engine, not being imported into the US, will often NOT show on the parts list above. I wanted the approx year engine to look up the electric starter parts break down, most starters look about the same (from what I saw).

                        Re the bearing, in your second picture, where the starter bolts to the block and the armature goes thru, there has to be a bearing. It would be inside part #4 , in the below parts fisch;

                        2004 F40EJRC Yamaha Outboard STARTING MOTOR Diagram and Parts

                        it doesn't show the bearing separate but part of that mounting section.

                        You mentioned it getting stuck (spinning I assume). Checking the upper and lower bearings for grease/failure, etc is what I was suggusting you check. Both should rotate freely obviously. With the armature in just the upper mount, is it rotating freely? Any binding/roughness?

                        Re the bench test, you can test the starter OFF the engine, apply 12 volts to it (ground it) and see if the issue is the starter itself, it may be the engine itself..

                          Here's your starter motor ID # ( 50-859170-1 ), at least the same part # as YOUR STARTER ;

                            I get what your saying now! It is spinning freely and seems fine with no grinding sounds. I will do some tests on it tomorrow thank you.
                            I recently had some electrical work done on my boat, can that affect it as well? The battery was right next to the engine less than a meter away now it's 4 meters away with 4 gauge wire running to the engine. The problem only occurred after the electrical work was done on the boat. Thank you again for all the explaining and help. Really much appreciated.

                              If the problem started after you had the work done, I would be looking there first. Something isn't right.

                              Specifically the battery. A load test wouldn't hurt to make sure its healthy. Make sure your starter is getting about 12 volts too when cranking it over.

                              A simple test that can be done to eliminate the starter; run another known good battery to the engine(and ground) and try starting with that(with water muffs on and water). Basically, jump starting it...
