I am new to buying a boat......For my first boat I found a 2002 sea fox 196 with a 2002 Yamaha 115hp 4 stroke outboard. I went to check out the boat and it ran great, BUT, around the motor there was a piece that was extremely rusted. Two things
    1. What is this piece called? Is it hard and expensive to replace?
    2. Should I still purchase the boat if this is the only thing wrong?

    Boat price is 7500.00

I attached the pic. It looks like it is the part that holds the top of the motor on, But I don't know much about this(please don't judge me)

It is called a steering bracket/arm. Quite normal for them to rust if the motor is used in saltwater and not fresh water rinsed after each use with corrosion protection then being applied.

It's hard to tell how bad it's rusted without chirping at it but I have an 88 Jonson that was rusted prity bad in the same place when I got it and I just cleaned it up really good bonded it and zinc coated it. It's bean fine for years now!

It dose tell you how well the previous owner has taken care of it and suggests that there may be other problems, not saying there is but likely! I got a really good deal on mine because of the PROBLEMS.

power head, lower unit, and mid section would have to all come off to get to that part for replacing. May break bolts trying to get them all apart

That's y I didn't replace mine! It just seemed like a lot of time and money to spend on what looked like a bunch of surface rust.

These are the signs of how well the boat was maintained. If the owner did not take the time to keep that area rinsed with fresh water, did he change the oil on time? There are so many of these types of boats on the market, I say keep looking.
