  • Spark plug wires

    1999 200 ox66 fuel injected
Kinda dumb question about spark plug wires,
Engine running at idle if I even touch the spark plug boot I get zapped
Is there supposed to be that much spark leakage thru the boot and wire?
    Cars aren't that bad

    Is this a joke?
Some sort of test for the apprentice to do?

just a dumb question on 2 stroke ignition systems
I know my way around car engines but 2 strokes are new to me
I wouldn't expect to get zapped that easily from a 2 stroke plug wire

I think there is a problem.

Is it one boot or more?

An insulator is either insulating properly or it is not.

If you're getting zapped by the spark plug wires then there is an insulation problem and a potential fire/explosion hazard under the cowling....

check to see if the cap is replaceable if the whole wire from coil is not

the cap is replacabvle AND twstable.
if your unplugging them using a bare had your gonna get zapped even with new stuff.
that system is capeable of about 50 KILO VOLTS.
                  means 50 THOUSAND volts.

however with the proper test equipment there is no need to ever unplug a plug wire.

I use a touch of silicone grease on the spark plug insulator and inside the spark plug boots to better facilitate their removal and replacement during normal plug cleaning/replacement....

I used silicone grease on mine and ever since have been having issues with the boots backing off and causing arcing and missing. I added zipties and they rarely back off now. But...I regret using the silicone grease. The later orange boots seem to stay on better......

A gentle, twisting motion to remove or install the boots...silicone grease keeps them from sticking....
