Just bought f40 and have some questions

    Just bought f40 and have some questions

    Hi I have just put a deposit on a 2008 f40bet The dealer I am buying from is servicing the engine before fitting to my boat and allowing me to sea trial it before parting with anymore money

    The service will include
    gear oil
    engine oil + filter
    Fuel filter
    Spark plugs

    He will also fit an inline water fuel separator

    Once the sale is complete the dealer offers a 6 month warranty

    So my questions are

    How do I find out if the engine has any common faults/recalls etc.... ?

    When I sea test the engine is there anything I need to look for

    Keep your fuel supply clean and fresh.

    Make sure the motor starts quickly and idles properly. Once warm, make sure there is no bogging or hesitation upon acceleration.

    More important if carbureted than if fuel injected but still important.

    If this is an EFI motor then there was a technical bulletin issued for the replacement of the electric fuel pump. At least here in the states there was.

    The F40BET is not offered here.

      As far as I can tell the engine is carburettor not efi

          Yes, those are the dreaded carburetors. All four of the pesky critters.

          If and when they clog up get back to us. There are several mods that can make that motor run flawlessly. If needed.

          But, that being a non-US model it might not have the very tiney jets that the EPA rammed down Yamaha's throat.

            Would have asked for a new internal anodes, timingbelt,loadspring and thermostat in the offered service. Check flywheel magnetos,as they sometimes "flyaway" (slipping glue) otherwise good and powerful motors.

                More than likely, not much. Maybe the jet sizes but maybe even those are the same.

                Almetelo checks in here from time to time and he can tell us if the jets are the same or not.

                Closest USA model appears to be an F40BTLR if your model has power trim and tilt, long shaft and is remotely con*****ed.

                  tell the dealer to run a diagnostic test so you can find out more about the engines plus how many hours has the motors done and if he is giving 6 months warranty tell him to replace the timing belt ,anodes and the rest as he wont be able to sell them as these models are made for overseas market

                      This motor does not record nor provide engine hours.

                      Almost anything (maybe everything) used on a US model F40BTLR will work on an F40BET.

                      Remember, you can ask the dealer for the moon, the sun and the starts. Him offering a six month warranty seems to be better than most would do.

                      I sell my used stuff and it is strictly "as is". Take it or leave it. If you don't like the terms don't buy the motor.

                          The same nasty too small idle mixture jet. The jet from hell. A #44 will make that motor purr like a kitten.

                            Find out when the water pump was last replaced.

                            If its been awile (over two years), I'd work out a deal on replacing it.

                              Not a bad idea to locate each carb float chamber drain plug and learn how to drain each one for any lay-ups of several weeks/months.....the float chambers(just like in the back of a toilet) is where water/trash/whatever will accumulate and draining is great preventive maintenance....once you do it once or twice, ain't nothin' to it!....
