  • Cylinder issue????? help....

    Hello all,

I have a 2007 50hp 2stroke yamha, well maintained and never had an issue until now. I was out on the boat yesterday for the 4th, and the motor ran well all day. Near the end of the day I throttled down to plane off to head in to the ramp. The boat would not get on plane, or run at full power. After a while of checking what I could on the water I gave it one more try to see if I could get full power. Same issue, but this time it made some horrible sounding noises, metal on metal. Almost sounded like the started was stuck hitting the fly wheel.... which was not the case, just best way to descrive the noise.

I am working 48hrs straight this weekend so will not have time until monday to get my hands on it. Im guessing a cylinder is dead? I plan to try everything I can before I decide to call my mechanic and pay 70-80$ an hour...

Would love some advise on what to try, look at, or if anyone else has run into this issue.

Thanks in advance, and I hope yal have had a great 4th of July weekend so far.

Any metal on metal noise is very bad. I would pull the spark plugs and take a look at them. One plug very different (smashed/beat up) is pointing you to the failure.

Check for obvious outside issues but its likely inside the engine.

I would NOT crank it over nor run it at this point. You may end up doing a compression test later which will likely show some very low compression #'s.

The head would probably be next to check for scoring to the cylinder, loose crank bearings etc.

Doesn't sound good at all unfortunatly..

Please post what you come up with and good luck..
