Is there a way to test the coils on this motor. Is it safe to run a spark test with the plug wire loose. I thought that I read sometime back it could cause a problem.
I'm way down on power, can't get past 1100RPM. I'm checking my carbs right now and putting in new plugs. Just put in 2 new fuel pumps with no change. The plugs are only a year old but I've seen bad new ones.
I'm starting to lean toward an electrical problem but that's scary for me.
I have a spark tester but am a little hesitant to use it until I get some advice.
    Thanks

as long as you allow the spark to jump to something(spark tester) it should not hurt anything

best way is to follow the steps in manual for testing ignition system components with the proper test equipment

I guess that I go back to my question.
Is there a way to test the coils separately.
I don't have special testing equipment only than a volt/ohm meter.

you can test the primary and secondary resistance as well as the spark plug cap resistance.
you most likely will find the coils good.
if it will jump a 7/16ths gap quit hunting ghosts.

the above chart has several typos and contains erroneous information.
I too have a few spec guides with the same errors.
use the secondary and the cap resistance specs.
              disregaurd the peak voltage specs.

C'mon now. That is Yamaha data. No one should expect it to be complete or accurate.

the only way to test the secondary output is with a Kv tester.
I guess one could use an inductive attenuator and an oscilloscope.

and running you should see something in the order of 6-8 Kv.

unloaded, sparkplug cap simply off, that system can generate upwards of 45Kv.

however if a simple spark test can arc across a 7/16th gap, quit chasing sasquatch.

if it can arc that 7/16ths gap guess what?
the ign PRODUCING components are working.

sometimes its best to leave ghost chasing to the ghost busters.

I've seen a broken advance link (plastic) cause what you are describing. Without timing advance it won't rev up.

I'm not sure what the advance link is but I tried (in neutral) using my fast idle lever and the motor advanced way up but it smoked a good bit, if this means anything. I've just been through my carbs and could not find any blockages but blew everything out with hp air, replaced plugs and reset TPS (which does increase voltage) when carbs are opened.
We have some cold weather moving in so it will be a couple of days before I can do a spark test. BTW, do I hook the tester between the plug wire boot and the plug? I don't have a remote starter so I imagine that I'll have to test with my muffs on.
                      Thanks

Rodbolt, I have good spark on all 6. I really didn't have to test my last one because my lead came off and I reached down and grabbed it. GOOD SPARK.
I must have a fuel system issue somewhere.
BTW: what is the "advance link" that BQUICK mentioned.
                        Thanks

its the linkage between the magneto control lever and the pulser coil plate.
the plate is mounted under the flywheel and driven with a link arm from the top of the magneto control lever.
