  • 04' F115 Water In Oil

    Hi Folks,

First time posting here and after searching for a while I wasn't able to find any info on my problem. Water in the oil.

Motor was running fine and then had the lower collar of the shifting rod break. Pulled the powerhead, replaced the shifting rod and cylinder gasket. While powerhead was off I noticed a little bit of milky oil but didn't think to much about it.

Since that time motor has had power problems. Motor seems to bog down when getting up on plane and will not go WOT bc it just bogs down. Lower the rpms and it runs like a top. Give it anykind of throttle and she bogs down under load. Runs fine in neutral and does not bog down.

Now I find water in my oil and have drained it. Going to put some 10w40 in it in the morning and take it back to the river. I'm a commercial fisherman and can't have this darn thing down for to long.

So any help on where to look would be much appreciated.

Sounds like something didn't get put back correctly when you put the powerhead back on. As for the bogging- pull the VST and clean the screen.

Well I would tend to agree with you, however I ran the boat with new oil and it ran like a screamin demon.... Forgot to mention I replaced an injector a few weeks ago as well along with new plugs... The screen you refer to was suspect to me aswell but it looks like possibly fuel and or water contamination was the issue and causing the motor to go into either a shutdown mode or cause the performance issue.

So it looks like I'll be looking for more causes and trying to narrow down the specific contents of the oil. I put about 10 hours a week on the motor so it should take long to recontaminate if the injector/plugs were causing it.

I'll be checking compression, doing a leak down, checking thermostat and running some ring free in the fuel to start.

From my best understanding there are a few ways water can enter the oil.
      1. headgasket - not super common if the motor hasn't been ran hot
      2. stuck thermostat-causing motor to run cold and not burn off condensation
      3. bad injector
      4. bad plugs - not getting motor up to proper operating temp
      5. overpropping- not reaching 5500- 6000 rpms at WOT - not sure about mine yet
      6. oil seal under powerhead-not sure how common this is with the 04 F115

I'm sure there are other major causes but I have no reason to believe a cracked block or head would be a possible cause.
