    Hi,

    I am new to the forum but am hoping to get some advise. I have a 2003 Yamaha T8 outboard - it has been an awesome little kicker motor. The power tilt and trim recently stopped working. The relay under the cowl of the motor is working properly - it generates +12V or -12V when the tilt button is pressed up or down. However, the electric motor that is part of the hydraulic tilt unit is not getting power. The two power wires from the relay enter a housing for the armature. One of the wires terminates at an electrical connector that then connects directly to a brush. The other power wire does the same, but fist goes through a small plastic enclosure before going to the brush. I am NOT getting any continuity through this enclosure. I tried the same continuity experiment with my buddies T8 that works properly, and he does get continuity through this plastic enclosure. I removed the plastic enclosure by un-soldering the power wire and carefully removing if from the housing. The enclosure simply has two metal contact points with a metal bridge between the contact points. It appears as if the bridge is warped, preventing a connection. Of course, I can't buy this part - it is not on the Yamaha schematic. I would need to buy an entire housing, which is about $600. My question is what does this bridge do? Does anyone know? Can I simply bypass it? Or is it designed to break the connection at some point.

    Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    thermal overload/fuse is my guess.

    Something caused too much current maybe

      that's exactly what that contactor is.
      its for thermal overload.
      however it should have remade contact when it cooled down.
      bypass it at your own risk.
      that little motor can draw a lot of current.

        Ok - thanks for the input. I wonder if there is any way to get a new "fuse"? That would be ideal. However the schematics appear to only sell the entire housing for an inexplicable price of over $600. Again, thanks for the input.

          You can get an entire replacement trim and tilt motor assembly for $367.38.

          Components within the motor assembly can be more expensive than the entire motor assembly.

            Thanks guys! This has been very helpful. I still hate to spend close to $400 to replace a $1 part, but it is sure better than spending $600 if worst comes to worst.

            Any idea how this circuit works? I assume the metal plate is heat sensitive and expands when too hot. The expansion causes the plate to slide off the contact points.....

              is this inside the motor housing?
              If so you might look for a used one.
              I believe most T&T motors are replaced due to rust in saltwater, so that device should be good still sitting in the junk pile

                Yes, this thermal switch is in the housing. I got it back together last night and it works properly now. However, I still have a hydraulic issue. As i have had the case apart, I assume I need to bleed the system. What is the proper way to do this? Right now, the motor is not moving up or down at all, although I feel the piston trying to move.
