  • 1500+ hours high?

New to the forums here and need some general outboard advice. Looking at buying a boat and I really don't know anything about outboard motors. I am an aircraft mechanic so I do know a little. One boat caught my eye here recently and the twin outboards have a little over 1500 hours on each. Don't know the model numbers. It I do know they are 2004 Yamaha 150's. It seems like 1500 hours are a lot but I don't know for sure. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

these motors if serviced properly and maintained will have 5 to 6 thousand hours no problem

The amount of hours is an issue, how much of an issue is impossible to decide, but then, new motors have problems! with a salt water engine, usually corrosion/rust will eat them away before there wear out, or a dud water pump or neglect will kill it before it wears out, the fact is, there is no answer to your question, they might go for another 1,500 hours, or blow up tomorrow.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I guess with anything mechanical, proper maintenance would be the key to long life. I just didn't know if it was like looking at a car with 350,000 miles on it. Thanks again.
