  • No water stream

Help! I am following my Yamaha service manual to perform carburetor link adjustment on my 90hp 2 stroke. Once I finish the adjustment there is no water stream coming from the tell tale, so I shut it down. In reading the manual troubleshooting section it looks like the carb link adjustment could cause overheating, which will happen if I run the motor with no cooling. I performed the carb link adjustment several more times thinking it can't be a coincidence, but no change. The tell tale water stream has always worked strong prior to this adjustment. I am doing this while in the water, at the pier, so that is not an issue. When I pulled over the garden hose and hooked it up to the flush adapter a strong stream comes out.

Is this a secondary problem that just happened when I did the link adjustment?

Your water pump has failed, nothing to do with carb adjustment....reason you have a tell-tell stream with garden hose hooked up is water psi from house is strong enough to push water though engine....

Could be the pick up screen got something over it and restricted the flow or something inside the cooling passages plugged off the TT for a bit.
Might be water pump just happened to come apart. If the pump has not been changed lately then it would not hurt to replace

          Thanks all.

Is there a recommended way to "blow out" the cooling passages before I replace the impeller? I have already blown out the short tube on the back going from the block to the plastic insert in the housing, but what about the passages below that, in the engine and lower unit?

Best way is to remove the exhaust manfiod cover, it's on the left side of engine, behind oil tank, big plate looking piece with lots of bolts, lol
Once that cover is off you can see the passages leading to exhaust, pull out any missing impeller parts.

Also thermostat will prob need to come out, it's located on rear of engine, just above #1 spark plug (the top one)

Once all thats out you can huff and puff all the compressed air you like though it...

whoops if your impeller disintegrated while running the motor you better clean the exhaust plate and make sure you remove all the pieces of impeller away other wise when you replace the new impeller and run the motor ,one of the old impeller bits will go and block your water ways thus leading to alarm and your motor will be running at 2200rpm

                woodruff key

I am trying to rebuild the water pump with a kit. The impeller did indeed start to come apart. However, I am having difficulty removing the woodruff key so that I can install the new gaskets, etc.. Is there a trick to getting this out? Thanks.

I know you already got your answer on another thread, but if you could keep it all on one thread, it'd be easier, especially for the more complicated issues.. Tks.

OK, sorry for the confusion. I wasn't sure if the woodruff key would be considered a new issue and if I should start a new thread, or not.

No problem, its just a bit easier, especially on the more involved problems.
