  • F150 head questions

I need the answer to a couple questions on a F150 that needed the cylinder head removed.

Are the main/bigger head bolts with the torque heads reusable or must they be replaced when the head is pulled?

It there any special sealant that is used on either side of a new head gasket, or is it installed straight from the package? The old head gasket from the factory seemed like it may of had a sealant on it.

    Thanks for any help.

    The head bolts are reusable.

There is no sealant added. The gasket itself comes coated with some sort of adhesive/sealant.

Have you already removed the camshafts and head? If not, be sure and follow the procedure outlined in the service manual. The camshafts are subject to breakage if the bearing caps are not removed and replaced in a certain order.

Also, be careful removing and reinstalling the camshaft drive belt tensioner.

You should get a copy of the SM. It will give you the torque values/angle of rotation and torque sequence to be used.

Thanks, have service manual but just wanted to confirm these 2 issues. Ex motorcycle mechanic, so understand overhead cam arrangements well.

      Thanks again.
