  • reverse motor boat c85 tlrr 1993

i just put on a water pump and took boat out to day to find out i have my reverse going forward, so when i put the boat inreverse it went forward ,and i put it forward the boat moves forward, how could this be related to a new water pump . i worked in reverse when i had a bad water pump, all i did was put a new one on.

my guess is you did not have the lower unit and shifter in the same gear position when you put it back together

          impeller change

The "indexing" is wrong on the shift shaft...you must drop the lwr unit again and set your index correctly.....

is that the one pic that slides in the the slots and over the rod comming down before you put the lower back up.looks kind of like a 2 blade propeller slides in slot .

                  shifter

Likely just have to shift it a little faster into gear. Don't slip it slowly into either gear, its not good for the gear cogs, it'll round off the edges..

                      Gears

Theres the vertical drive shaft with one smaller gear on it, usually bolted to the end of the shaft. The drive (prop shaft) has a forward gear and reverse gear on it. All the gears mesh together constantly. The shifter /cog goes forward or back as you shift the engine mkoving the cogs into forward or reverse gears (thus giving you forward or reverse).

If there's an issue with the gears, you won't know until it's pulled apart.

If you drain the lower unit oil into a super clean pan, look closely for any metal particles. If you see any, thats not good. Theres of course neumerous bearings for the shafts inside as well..

                      Good luck.
