I have a damaged keyway on the drive shaft (water pump). How do I remove the drive shaft, I have stripped it down however there may be a large nut under the bearing preventing the removal of the shaft?

There is a pinion nut that holds the pinion gear in place. This nut and the pinion gear have to be removed to remove the drive shaft.

Go into the gear case and put a socket wrench on the pinion nut. Then you will use a special tool that attaches to the drive shaft so that it can be turned to break the pinion nut loose.

Unscrew the nut, remove the pinion gear and I think the drive shaft will come right out. Be careful of any bearings that may come loose when you do this.

if shaft replacement is nessasary it will also require reshmiming.
if this is a L lower the propshaft and carrier come out as a unit after shift shaft removal.

        Thanks guys

The carrier was giving me some grief, once that started to move all went well.
