  • 1984 50HP Oil Pump Replacement !?

    Hi All,

I just purchased a "new to me" boat and it runs great, but makes a mess with leaking oil. Previous owner ran it like that, said it is fine, and even provided me with new oil pump replacement part, he just didn't have time to get it done.

I am a "newbie" with motors etc.

I took a quick look and doesn't appear to be too complicated, just have two questions/worries.

    1. The replacement part (6HA-W1320-09) comes with no instructions and is slightly different. The old original one has 3 tubes on the top and the new one has 2 on the top and one on the side. I am assuming it makes a difference what tube goes where for timing or something?

    2. How do I check to make sure the new one is working properly and actually pumping oil once it is on?

I have no service manual, but see places online that sell them in PDF and can download, is it worth it?

Thanks in advance for any help, want to fix the leaking oil pump asap. It leaks all over my lane way etc.

Your asking a question that maybe a little hard to help without pictures...

For sure you should spring for a service manual, get a factory Yamaha one, others here may like the clemyers, chilton etc..., but I don't....the OEM ones seem to be more detailed, and not so generic, but thats my $0.02

as mentioned, buy a genuine manual for your motor and be done with it, everything will be explained in detail, maybe Rodbolt will pop in and be able to give you advice.

let me try to do some looking, you either have the wrong pump or a partial kit.
the old kien pumps were different than the later style mikuni pumps.
