  • battery question

Hello friends.. I have a question concerning a replacement battery for my boat. I only have one battery on board used 95% of the time just for starting... never run accessories on the boat when the motor is off. I was thinking of replacing my existing battery with a new amg marine battery but have heard that using an amg battery might damage my outboards charging system. It's a 2009 Yamaha 75 hp four stroke. Any truth to this.. If so, should I just get a normal wet cell battery and be done with it. Also, would it harm anything if I replaced the existing battery with one that far exceeds the requirements of my boat motor. By that I mean the owners manual says the minimum cca for my yammy is 380, would it hurt anything if I got one that had 800 or more cca's. Also if you guys would like to recommend any batterys / brands I would certainly appreciate it... thanks

Wet cell only... thanks.... now another question... this is my first boat / motor so please forgive what I'm sure are silly questions.... when I replace my battery ( wet cell ) should I get a "starting battery", a dual purpose battery, or a deep cycle battery? From what I've read a deep cycle battery is mainly used on boats with a lot of electronics... other than starting my boat, the only thing(s) my battery will be running is a depth finder and occasionally navigation lights... and those will only be used when the motor is RUNNING.... I looked at my boat battery this past weekend... couldn't see a model number or if it said starting or dual purpose.. All I could see was the name ( Continental ) and it said Marine / Rv on the front.... also, any recommendations on what "brand" to buy...Thanks for your help.. I appreciate it

most any marine RV battery will be fine.
most any battery above 500 MCA will work well.

          wet cell only

I was considering an Optima Marine battery for replacing the start battery on my boat. Why wet cell only?? Seems misleading to sell a Marine battery if you can't use it???

Stay away from Optima,, they will do you a disservice,, I have found that AGM and Gel batteries do not work as advertised,, possibly due to the charging rate of outboards..

An AGM battery is a lead acid battery. For the most part, their charging rates are the same as flooded lead acid batteries. Many, many Yamaha owners are using AGM batteries with no problems whatsoever.

It is interesting to note that after many years of Yamaha saying that only flooded lead acid batteries should be used, they have now changed their position and are saying that AGMs and gell cell batteries can be used with their EFI four strokes. Very strange since most gell cell battery makers specify different charge voltages for gell cell batteries.

For some strange reason, they still don't want AGM and gell cell batteries used with their two stroke motors or carbureted four strokes. Since the output of most voltage regulators are more or less the same, this does not make sense to me.

Finally, after years and years of mandating batteries with certain Reserve Capacity requirements, Yamaha is now saying they did not really mean it. The RC requirements for some motors have been lowered.

What next about which will they be saying "we did not really mean what we were saying before"?

And strangest of all, they are now saying that certain maximum amperage output limits should be imposed. Strange again because a starter motor will only draw what it needs. Just like a circuit in my house is rated at 30 amps. If I plug in a lamp that draws only one amp, no harm no foul. The lamp only consumes what it needs.
