  • 1988 Yamaha 9.9 Mdl F9.9ELG Shift Cable

My Yamaha 9.9 (Electric Start) broke its shift cable between the Control Arm and the shift mechanism. Instead of replacing the shift cable, I am look at installing a Shift Lever PN 682-44111-01-94 on the side of the engine and doing away with the Shift Cable PN 6G8-48321-10-00. One reason is cost, $23 vs $81 andthe second is that the engine is used on my sailboat. As soon as the sails are up, engine is pulled up with the control handle stowed. This action alone is wea and tear on the cable.

Based on the microfiche for a 1988 9.9ELG Yamaha Control on Boats.net, ( 1988 9.9ELG Yamaha Outboard CONTROL ENGINE Diagram and Parts ) it should work. My engine does have a plastic cover on that side of the engine case where such a Shift Lever would go and the shifting mechanism does have a square control rod extending towards the plastic cover.

I would like anyone with knowledge and or mechanical background to advise me whether this is a viable soluion.

You may contact me at sailingrmm@yahoo.com

    Thanks to all!

Never tried it but shouldn't have any problems converting it.
