  • Oil leaking from 98' Yamaha 225 lower unit

    Hey Guys,
You have been a Godsend so far, hope that you can help once again. Have a 1998 Yamaha 225 2 Stroke. This was completely rebuilt from the ground up in my garage under close supervision, yet it has been a nightmare since it's completion.

After several mechanics and different opinions, we finally got the engine performance issues resolved only to have water blowing out just above the steering arm under the cowl. Even with a 3M watt search light shining on it while under pressure, I could not tell where the water is coming from. Good thing is that the water does not seem to penetrate the inside cowl area.

So in my attempt to discover WHY and WHERE the water is coming from, I removed the lower unit. During re-installation, I installed incorrectly, had to remove and re-install properly to engage prop. So all is well, I THINK, and about an hour after I set the boat on the driveway for pre-trip outfitting, I noticed lower unit oil on the driveway. So I again removed the lower unit,( I am gettin good at this now), and carefully inspected the water pump housing and shaft seal. The shaft seal appears to be leaking as I can clean it with a Q-tip, wait a few seconds and oil reappears. So now being suspect of lower unit oil contamination, I removed the L/U screw to find milky white oil. So I drained out all the old oil and now the question I need an answer to is this:

1.)Do you think the bad shaft seal could have caused the oil contamination?
2.)Do you think the water above the steering arm has anything to do with leaking back into the L/U oil?
3.) Is it safe to assume that I could refill the L/U with new oil and run the boat this weekend, close to home, without killing L/U ?
4.) Called local shop, he said my counter-rotating L/U is more complicated to reseal than regular units and he said he charges 3-4 hours labor, plus parts.
I said that was high. If I am having to pay 400.00 to refurbish this old C/R L/U, when I can buy one completely reconditioned for 900.00.
5.) or is it relatively easy to replace the shaft seal under the water pump housing and move forward with that scenario first.

So many questions in South Florida, trying to get the boat on the water this weekend. Thank You, sorry for being so wordy.

you can pressure test the unit to find leak
check gaskets @ drain plug and upper vent
i got lucky with my last and just replaced the 2 drive shaft seals, just under the waterpump

the left hand case prop seals are a beast and yes it takes time and some special tooling. drive shaft seals are easy.
the power head water leak has nothing to do with gear oil.
both issues need to be resolved.
